  • Hi everyone, I haven't posted on this thread since before Christmas:eek: I actually 'lost' it. This site is huge!

I have come on here to post about the latest battery hen rescue coming up in case anybody is interested. This is the advert we have been putting around to advertise the rescue.

Hen Rehomers Uk are rehoming ex-battery hens on Saturday 19th February. If you are interested in rehoming some of these hens, please visit our website www.henrehomers.net and complete an application form.

We do ask for a donation - this is to cover cost of securing the lives of the hens and arranging transport to the various collection points we have in the country.

We are also looking for volunteers. Interested? Please register your interest on our website.

    Many thanks

This rescue is at very short notice and there are 1500 hens available for rehoming that day. We are hoping to rescue them all if possible, other wise they will go to slaughter, which is a great shame. The ex batts make great pets and it is very humbling to care for them and watching them flourish.:T
Perhaps readers of this thread could maybe spread the word to others that may like to adopt some hens.....we don't have alot of time left between now and the rescue.

Well, i've been out and bought purple spray... poor Lily looks like she's been graffiti'd on!!!!!!!

I've also sprayed Mabel as the 2 bullies have started on her this morning.... bad news is that the pecking has not stopped :(

Lilly has been attacked again several times and Mabel a couple too... I wish I knew why they were doing this!

Maybe I should pop out and get som stockholm tar??

I was all for it, till I found out that they stop laying after about 3-4 years then you have to kill them

    arrrrrgh

They don't tend to stop completely one every couple of days, (usually slightly wonky!) and the chickens tend to expire naturally after about 4 years

I noticed that it doesn't actually say on the website where they're based, but Meggielo's location says East Sssex, so it might be around there.

Wammy, are the chickens confined to a run? I'm wondering if they're pecking out of boredom.

My girls have kept laying through the winter, although they did slow down. Some days I'd get only a couple of eggs from the 4 who lay, other days I'd get 3 or 4, but they seem to be picking up now. Even one of the silkies has started laying. She's a bantam, so her eggs are small, but the yolk isn't much smaller than the full size eggs!

Ooh, I'm getting a couple of cream legbars later this week, they lay blue eggs!

Oh JD, I've decided on Black Rocks but will get mine when the weather gets better. They say they're ok for wild weather, that's why I chose them.

If I had more room and another coop I'd be up for the rescue.... unfortunately my coop/house isn't big enough to take any more chickens :(

They free-range in the garden - the house we bought comes with a run attached but it's just so tiny that I wouldn't be happy to leave them in it all day.

Our garden is approx 25ft square so should be enough room??

We've put the tar on Lily and the bully has only tried twice to peck her.... fingers crossed that this has put a stop to it :)
