Just a suggestion if you're on a tight budget, you can Re-Home some hens
Quote from their site,
We do not make a charge for the hens or their adoption, but we do welcome donations which go towards covering what we pay the farmers, vet fees, petrol, phone bills, trailers, equipment and feed as well as supporting our ongoing and very successful campaign work for a free range future."We could say the government spends like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors, because the sailors are spending their own money."

I'll add this to the existing thread where it may help others in the future.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0

MM, are worms a problem in a fixed run ? Mine will be in a strip up top of the garden, fence doff but fixed. If that makes sense lol!
Can be more of a problem than free ranging but best to incorporate worming into your normal routine of care. No egg withdrawal with both the types I use (although I normally ditch my eggs on the flubenvet week, don't know why!). This time of year is good to do as laying can be a bit sporadic. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.
If you quote me, don't forget the capital 'M'

just thought id give you a quick update with my chickens dying problem. We went all CSI on it and have set traps but to no avail but did find weasel tracks around the back of the hen house. Amy our last remaining girl is living it up with us in the evenings, she is in a cardboard box in the kitchen, and probably will be for a few more days till we can afford some more hens, think she might die of loneliness out there. She is back on lay which is lovely and is a happy bird but is wary of being without us in the garden, although i think this may be a company reason. Does anyone think getting a cockerel would deter pests?
Hope all of you are ok.
Kind Regards
Princess
Hope Amy is ok and that you can get some more chickens soon to keep her companyMoney_maker wrote: »
Moving off topic, I lost one of my ex batts last week, she was a bit light so have rushed to re-worm (all but one of mine are in a static run). Found www.petsensedirect.co.uk to be cheap and quite quick. Their flubenvet 60g is £13.95 delivered 2nd class although I did pay an extra £1.20 for 1st class. Much better than the £20+ I paid at scats! I do also use the verm-x in conjuction but would not rely on it as mine are fixed run and prone to re-infection.
HTH someone.
Feel quite bad if that is the reason I lost my girl. She was freed from battery last august. Last morning she managed to get through the covered run, into the outdoor run, over the mud (bit soggy here) and up onto a small wire 'box' in the run (used to use it to keep food off the ground). Then she laid out with the little bit of sun that day shining on her and passed away. As a Free Hen.
Thanks for the linky - I tend to use Scats as it's my closest store for chicken bits (I think!) - our pets at home store only has feed and grit, and local farm doesn't stock it
I'm sure it wasn't anything you did, sometimes it just happens... so sad_____________________________________________party_ Handmade Christmas and Occassions 2011 _party_OS Moneysaving as much as I canGonna live 'The Good Life' - grow my own and 4 hens

It's sad that she died, but what a nice place for her to go, enjoying the sunshine in freedom.
I'm sorry for your loss.0 -
Hi all
Any help or advice on this would be HUGELY appreciated.
I have 4 chickens, they have been together since hatching, we bought them home together and they live together, and free range during the day.
This afternoon 2 of the 4 chickens have been pecking at Lily and have drawn blood. Lily is white so it stands out like a sore thumb and as such the 2 chickens keep pecking at her where the blood is, making the wound worse. Hubby is on 'chicken watch' currently to ensure they don't keep on hurting her, but I don't know what to do to stop it. I'm worried they will continue hurt her over night....
Lily is the quiet one of the group, very docile and will let you hold her and pretty much does her own thing - the 2 who have been pecking her are a little more feisty (!) and I've read it's just them establishing a pecking order.... that's fine, I know this will happen, but they have pulled out a patch of her feathers and the blad patch is really sore and bloody
The 4th chicken hasn't pecked Lily and doesn't seem interested or bothered by the blood???
HELP!!!!!
