So I got my chickens today and I am half scared half excited. I have 2 gold penciled Hamburgs which are about 6 weeks old. A Polish bantam (white) which is apparently laying regularly and is almost a year old and then a 'cuckoo pekin carlisle game hen' cross (black) which is about 10 weeks old. I will try to attach some photos...

Hope this works...
Oh.... I haven't decided on names yet!0 -
I'll take some new photos once it stops raining and post them - last time I did it was May, and they've grown a lot since then (and we had some changes). As for names, we try very hard not to name them - but it just happens somehow. The two cockerels are now Charles Atlas and Lurkio. The 4 hens are still referred to by their specific breed, but I'm sure they will also accidentally acquire names sooner or later, because of some strange habit or funny accident, or something.
Lurkio! LOL! That's a quality name!! :rotfl:0 -
I bought them some corn on the cob today as a treat and they went crazy for it! They love it! Plus...... I got my first egg from my white polish bantam, now named Tufty!:beer:0

Hello everyone,
Our 3 ladies have started laying smaller eggs and the yolks are not too yellow. I haven't changed their feed and was just wondering whether this is normal going into Autumn - we've only had them since the spring.
Also should we be worming them around now. They haven't been done since we got them.

Another one of my other chickens seems to have sprung a tumour overnight.
I checked them all when the other chook got ill last week and had to be put down - now it looks like another one is going down with the same thing.
I can't believe how quickly it seems to have appeared - I felt all their tummies and there was no sign.:(Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

NEWBIE ADVICE PLEASE!
I have been toying with the idea of keeping hens for years, and have decided to take the plunge! I was very keen on the idea of an eglu as my garden is not that big, and had been on the omlet website every couple of days waiting to get details of one of their beginners courses at the weekend so I and my daughters can go ( as there is only one course in Scotland). When I was on yesterday, I happened to see on their newsletter that the price of the classic will go up £65 today!
I called them and explained the situation, and they were terribly nice and agreed to hold one for me at the old price until I can get on one of the courses. I then contacted the person running the course and she has agreed to do one next Saturday - so it looks like it's all systems go!
Initially I had thought that it would be better to wait till spring. I wondered what everyone's views are? Should I just get them as soon as the eglu arrives, or would I be better to store it in my basement and wait till spring? What are the disadvantages to starting in autumn/winter?
I am presently working my way through this thread, but am limiting myself to 10 pages a day and am up to page 50!0 -
This is a good question as apart from practicalities my end (garden a mess lol) I was also wondering whether to hold off or not. Esp as being a newbie I will want to be out with them lots and this time of year when it gets cold I won't want to be. So I was thinking of waiting til then not only to get our garden sorted but also for the weather and to enjoy them more as a newbie outside.0

Hi peeps
Quick question. We had chooks at our old house, they had a large area to roam in (after we had out garden and lawn completely eaten buy the 7 lovely ladies) We only had them for about 18 months until we had to move to this house, so they have gone to live with my sister in law. But I really miss their antics and having lots of lovely eggs to eat - shop ones are not the same
Anyway our back garden is mostly paved with some borders (see Photo) do chucks have to be kept on grass/dirt?
Your help is much appreciated.Donna
