Aw, poor Little Baldy. I hope the others leave her alone soon.

Rotwein, I am getting two chickens tomorrow too, to keep my one remaining ex-batt (Mavis) company. I have decided their names will be Hepzibah and Florence :D Unless they look like they would suit different names, of course.

Im pleased you managed to get some more girls to keep Mavis company. Hope all goes well with them. We are a daft lot arent we - just look at the names we carefully choose - mine are Billy, Bob and Beaula. Get yourself a vinegar and water spray to put on the one thats being bullied - worked great for me! - Im guessing one will lose out, they usually do. If you want a sack of feed next time I go to Jolleys, let me know and we can drop it off for you hunny.

  • Thanks everyone for your kind words about my poor hen that had to be put down.

Moneymaker, I will be keen to hear how you get on with the beak bumpers as I have been thinking of getting some - my ex-batts are so mean to each other.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Oh, poor little Baldy. I really feel for her!

We're picking up a couple of silkies this evening and possibly a pekin too. :) Before we got chickens (when hubby was still saying that we couldn't get any!) we saw some silkies at the local garden centre, scratching around under the benches of plants. Hubby thought they looked mad and said that if we were to get chickens, we'd have to get some silkies, so he's finally getting his wish!

I don't have any pics of the girls on this pc, but hubby has some videos on you tube if you want to see them.

Choosing daft names for them is half the fun! I have decided to change the names - one is called Hepzibah and the other is called Morticia. Morticia is holding her own against Mavis Hen, but Hepzibah is going to be the loser, I think. However, she does have a secret weapon - she can fly up to the perch in the pen, and Mavis can't. So at least she can escape when she needs to. Mavis is Not Pleased and is very vocally making her displeasure know. I am just going to finish my cup of tea and then I will go and sort out bed-time for them.

I am really looking forward to getting to know them.

ETA Thank you for the offer of the lift, but I think I am going to order food online as I can get the dog food too and free delivery. Works out ok money-wise although it always feels like a lot to pay all in one go!

Oh, but when the farmer opened the barn door and there were thousands of little beaky faces looking curiously up at us - I could have taken every single one .... the ones that are left are going for slaughter on 26 September :(

So I got my chickens today and I am half scared half excited. I have 2 gold penciled Hamburgs which are about 6 weeks old. A Polish bantam (white) which is apparently laying regularly and is almost a year old and then a 'cuckoo pekin carlisle game hen' cross (black) which is about 10 weeks old. I will try to attach some photos...

    Hope this works...

Oh.... I haven't decided on names yet!

I'll take some new photos once it stops raining and post them - last time I did it was May, and they've grown a lot since then (and we had some changes). As for names, we try very hard not to name them - but it just happens somehow. The two cockerels are now Charles Atlas and Lurkio. The 4 hens are still referred to by their specific breed, but I'm sure they will also accidentally acquire names sooner or later, because of some strange habit or funny accident, or something.

Can chickens get fleas? Mine stroll through the house occasionally. I've been bitten recently. Do I join the two sentences together?
