I think Dh will go mad if I put lights in the coop. the guinea pig/rabbit shed has lights (now solar powered) and even a radio! DD realised that when she had the radio on in there whilst she cleaned them out they were very relaxed and one who had pneumonia got well with anti-biotics and classical music ! Though I went in one day and they were listening to a programme on depression, don't think that did them much good:rotfl:

Mind you I could teach the chooks to work the wind up lamp and radio it would probably be ok :T

    Hi hope all are well?
We have now had 5 eggs in total from our four girls, the eggs are tiny though. I've read somewhere that they will get bigger in time.
I bought my first lot of layers pellets from our local pet shop at £1 a kg. Where does everyone get there's from and how much do you pay? I live near Stafford, Staffordshire anyone know of anywhere locally selling layers pellets?
Also we are going to attempt to clip their wings this evening ( hopefully this evening they will be a bit more docile?), I know that you should only clip one wing and have watched a video so any other tips?
    Many thanks

I did once buy one of those stick on, battery powered lights and put that in. It was like a small dome that you pressed to light it and then again to turn it off. Cost me a fortune in batteries as the girls kept turning it on themselves ... think they thought it was a sort of disco ball .... party hens!!!!!!

Lol, that made me chuckle! :rotfl:

£1 a kilo is very expensive. Do you have a Countrywide near you, or an agricultural supplies place? I buy a 20 kilo bag of Allen and Page free range layers pellets for £9.49

You can get Countrywide's own brand for only £6.59 for a 20 kilo bag.

I have found a nearish countrywide, on the net for that particular store it doesn't say that they sell chicken feed so I'll phone them in the morning and ask. Its a 40min drive away so I think I'd better phone first. Thanks for that info, much apprieciated.

Why don't you ask the breeder who you got your chickens from where they buy their feed?

Have orderd some food from G J W Titmuss, should be here tomorrow. Price was £7.00 a 20kg bag but then postage was £7.00 also. Then I found some slightly cheaper at Virmisell on line. Its the postage that bumps the price up so have a couple of phone numbers of local suppliers so will give them a ring in the morning.
Clipped all the girls wings about an hour ago, was really quick and easy, not at all stressful. So while I'm at work tomorrow but kids (one is a teenager!)are at home they can be safely in their run. The girls seem fine no ill effects at all, which is good.

Pets at Home sell chicken food and whilst not the cheapest place probably cheaper than paying P&P on top of the price of food.
  • Try your local farmer..I buy my chicken feed at £3.00 for 20kg of mixed corn and £5.00 for 20kg of Layers pellets....But I have to buy in bulk cos I have 26 chickens, 3 ducks and 3 geese!! Lots of hungry beaks to feed and hopefully more on the way!!!

I pay £7 for 25kg (local feed supplier), but have been promised a reduction if I supply him with pickled eggs and homemade chutneys :D
