what do you use to worm your chooks? I've been using Verm X but read recently on the net it wasn't very effective :undecided I asked at the Vet about Flubavet (sp?) but the woman I spoke to at reception had never heard of it, although we were told to ask there by the vet. They said they'd look into ordering it, but they haven't yet rung back. Is this something that I can order online, or do I have to get it specifically through the vet?

Sorry for all the questions, but I just want to make sure I am doing the best for my girls.

Hi Miss T, I ordered Flubenvet from here http://www.greenfarmhealth.co.uk/?atk=224&prk=399 for £13.90 and free delivery - they seem to have increased it to £14.10 now, although I only bought mine last week!

    HTH :)

I just ordered some wormer too, realised we are already over 6 months in, doesnt time fly!
miss t, many vets dont seem to know too much about hens, they arent really treated as a "pet" and the majority of potential problems seem to be treatable at home, look at the links that have been posted here, most things can be our fault as humans, but also treatable with diet and stuff. Worming however, I totally forgot to do, as my girls seem so happy and healthy, and time has flown, I didnt even realise I was behind with it :S totally my fault.
    Hope you are ok Giger.

Be firm, pick them up one by one, pop them in their bed, shut the door and then pick up another one. They'll be fine xx

thanks guys, I have just gone and checked and one is in the hen house but blocking the doors for the others, one was half way up the ladder, so i managed to push the one in the door way in, but she wasnt happy properly squaked at me and ran in and the other one just got a bit stressy and jumped down, im hoping now that one is in there that the others will follow, especially as its raining, I will check on them later, just worrying really.

I have tried to be firm but they are pretty big and have never been handled which makes it difficult, thank you so much for your swift responses it is very much appreciated.

    xx

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this thread is the only thing that cheers me up. I wished that I could wait until it got dark before I went to bed, some nights I don't seem to remember much after 8 o clock until I wake up thinking where am I, what time is it, who is the president ?
"one of their bums is sticking out of the house so I cant close the door" You women are all the same, does my bum look big in this ? :rotfl:

Mine are going to bed at around 9.30 at the moment. I've got some solar fairy lights in the garden that come on when the light drops to a certain level and I've found that they come on at the same time that the girls go in their coop! With the evenings getting darker earlier, the girls bedtime will also get earlier.

The head chicken is always the last to go in. She likes to make sure all the others are in and then she'll walk around the coop to check that everything is ok before she finally goes in herself.

I'm usually out there to make sure they've all gone in before I lock them up, but if they've gone in while I'm not there, I check in the coop and do a head count.

    Hi all,

What a lovely bunch of henny people you all sound to be. Have had a busy weekend so just catching up with all the new posts.

Jexygirl - don't worry .. I do not claim to be an expert myself. Just love the little beasties to bits. It is always good to hear other people's experiences. There is always lots to learn. That is why I like to spend time on the Omlet website. There is always something to learn or soemone to give advice if you are unsure.

Gigervamp - so very sorry to hear about Agatha. It is heartbreaking when you lose one but just think what a lovely life she had with you. I still get very upset when I lose one and they are all still in the garden. Hugs

Miss T - sounds like you are sorted with info for Flubanvet. That is what I use too. How are your girls now? Has harmony been restored?

Moominyak - how exciting to be getting your new girls. Thanks and hope they give you loads of pleasure. Certain they will.

    To everyone else :-)

On the subject of going to bed ... never had much of problem with mine on that score but I know people who swear by putting a light in the henhouse as it starts to go dark. The hens apparantly will move in towards the light. I did once buy one of those stick on, battery powered lights and put that in. It was like a small dome that you pressed to light it and then again to turn it off. Cost me a fortune in batteries as the girls kept turning it on themselves ... think they thought it was a sort of disco ball .... party hens!!!!!!
Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend
