Lol, two of my girls went on a little excursion yesterday. I happened to glance out of my kitchen window and saw two animals walking past up on the grass of my neighbours garden. It took my brain a second to register that the animals weren't cats (which are what would normally be up there) but Daisy and Gracie out taking a stroll! :rotfl:
I'm not sure if they flew over the wall or squeezed through the iron railings of our garden. Luckily, it was nearly time for their corn, so getting them back was easy enough!0 -
Mine seem to think the whole local neighbourhood is their territory ... I have to give egg presents to neighbours from time to time ...
Actually, I haven't seen them since a couple of them strolled through the house a while ago - better go and round them up.

Oh man, after dusting all the lasses with louse powder, replacing the coop bark, n cozy coop bedding, spraying the whole house with dettol ( as suggested on PP forum)dusting with louse n red mite powder on Saturday, Have just checked the worst infested , the partridge wyandotte and her bot is still red and the clumps off lice eggs are back
I didn't want to resort to the johnsons anti mite spray because its chemical and has egg withdrawal but don't feel like I have any choice. Ive also read that permethrin based powders for killing ants can be used to dust coop to prevent the lice. Don't think she'd take to havin a bath with flea powder, she'd quite jittery and would freak right out. Can anyone suggest an effective way to get rid of the little crawling devils, they were crawling over my arms while powdering her , yak yak yak!!! Thank you fellow chicken lovers!! P.s - I've also read about Frontline but as it isn't licensed for poultry , know this is very naughty.

From reading around it just seems that the cheaper coops don't last and I'm not keen on wasting money and not very good on DIY skills so the eco house seems a possible option. Would love to reduce costs if anyone can suggest a viable option though!
You have the budget, go for it, sure looks like a sweet set up!:DRIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

Does anyone know if chickens can lay more than one egg a day?
We have 3 chickens and when I let them out this morning I'm sure there were no eggs laid, however when I checked the coop this evening there were 4 eggs! Is it possible that one of them has had a very busy day?I enjoy a pint of beer each night for it's health benefits. The other pints are for my witty comebacks and flawless dance moves.0 -
yes they can, especially if they are young hybrid layers0

My 3 girls laid 4 eggs yesterday - ex batts - and we celebrated with a few slugs. I also try not to go down the chemical route for parasites. I doknow that citronella candles get rid of red spider mites so am going to move the girls out every couple of weeks and burna candle in the coop. As for lice, i haven't heard of a good way of getting rid sorryClearing the junk to travel light

We got two new girls last Monday, Agatha and Tabitha, they're Bluebelles. They've been sleeping in their own coop, but I let them out to freerange with the others after a few days.
Tabitha laid her first egg on Saturday. It was small and undeveloped with no shell, just the membrane holding it all together. Then on Monday when I went to let them out, she stood at the door of the run and out dropped an egg! Another small one, but complete. This morning, there was a normal sized egg in the coop, so it looks like she's getting into the swing of things now.
Agatha isn't laying yet but she seems to have taken a shine to me.Every time I'm in the garden, she hops onto my back. She seems to like having a piggyback ride and chatters away to me whilst we go around the garden! She's so sweet!
