you should have phoned the insurance up beforehand to ask about this. if they say no then avoid doing the swap until your renewal and move to an insurance company that will support it at renewal.

Well, there is always a question when you apply for car insurance along the lines of "have you ever had cover cancelled or been denied cover?" isn't there? And not answering honestly would invalidate the policy potentially.

Post #9 (above this one) for why their isn't an issue in this case.

If it had been cancelled because the policy fees weren't paid for example, it would be a very different matter.

The warning from the OP is a fair one I feel. Hopefully someone else put in this situation will know they need to sound out their insurer first as it can be an issue (despite what the OP's Kia mechanic believed)
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

    No, it's a different situation.
When you inform them of a change to the vehicle, you are re-negotiating the contract. Because the contract terms have changed, they can refuse to cover you, as has happened here. They have not cancelled an ongoing insurance policy, they simply refused to cover the insured person under new terms.

I've had the same happen to me: I got an online quote and bought online. About 6 months later I phoned them up like a good boy to tell them I'd changed the brake pads to uprated Ferodo ones. At this point, they said that there had been a computer error with my original quote, and the computer had offered me insurance at a price they weren't willing to honor. Since I was now informing them of a material change to the contract, they withdrew my insurance as they had the opportunity to do so upon re-negotiation.

It's NOT a 'cancelled policy' and does not need to be declared if they ask you if you've had a policy cancelled or had special terms imposed.

So yes, it's total scaremongoring BS on the part of that poster.

The change of hubs being an issue is just a red herring. Search for AutoDirect car insurance reviews and it will tell you you should never have given your business to them in the first place.
All the cheap car insurers are just the same, all skills removed, one-size fits all policies and penalties and hassle thereafter.

Exactly. The question is intended to find people who've had insurance cancelled for doing naughty things like lying about their convictions or failing to keep up payments - not people who one particular insurer didn't want to insure on the new terms.

If I win the lottery, get rid of my Ford, buy a Ferrari and try to transfer the policy, do I have to declare for the rest of my life that I've had insurance cancelled if I find out that my current insurer doesn't insure Ferraris? Clue: no.

It matters not why it was cancelled.
The Question is have you ever "had" insurance cancelled.
Not have you ever cancelled insurance.
The answer options to the question are are :
    YES or NO.

Failure to declare a material fact can and does result in the "new insurance" getting cancelled.
This is 2014 not 1974 where it was all on paper.

All insurance companies now subscribe to the Motor Insurers database for fraud prevention.
Cancelled insurance policies are entered and cross checked.

If the insurance company have stated we no longer wish to insure and offer to cancel that is different.
If they cancel the policy, then you now have to declare that you have had insurance cancelled.
There is no option to negotiate why.

This is notwithstanding the OP made this clear to the new insurance or got the wrong end of the stick.
But take out new insurance when the old one was cancelled by the insurance company and there is likely to be a storm on the horizon if you failed to declare cancelled policy.

Those that do not understand the implications of having your insurance cancelled by the underwriter, well google awaits you.
    Be happy...;)

But they haven't technically cancelled. They've declined to quote on a revised risk that's outside their business model, which is an entirely different thing.

I often wonder when I see cars that young people have modified (headlights, dropped suspension etc) whether they have invalidated their insurance which probably cost as much as the car.

    What a joke !

I run a car with a different engine entirely to the one it used to have... my insurance company was great, just asked what the engine came from, i told them, and they gave me the same price i had been paying before as the engine was the same, but chassis was different !

All it says on my insurance certificate is non standard engine lol.

Seriously, i would not have bothered telling them about 4wd hubs, it doesnt effect the vehicles performance in any way.

The post about brake pads is even more laughable, its just a different brand of pad for christs sake !
