So time keeps moving on. Results of the last test were almost totally ok (a teeny tiny hiccup, but on a part that was removed during surgery). I'm now waiting on a further test to see whether the Really Nasty Treatment is going to be deemed necessary. At the moment the docs said they would support a decision either way; but this test gives us a bit more science to go on. They were pretty optimistic at the hospital as to how things had gone, so I am feeling pretty good. Physically I've not felt sick at all which is the weird thing; and surgery recovery is going well too.

So in money news, well the critical illness has paid out. That's all a bit weird but does change things significantly. The thoughts are naturally moving on to our build project. Since D-day (diagnosis Day) we have commissioned an architect and are meeting him on site this week. We are hoping to have our plans in for the end of the month if we like what he comes up with. Given the extra money, we haven't said "up the budget" but we have said we can now manage to not compromise on what we'd originally hoped for. I don't know if we will end up totally mortgage free, but it's certainly going to help.

I really feel like I should skip over to the MF board but maybe not quite yet...

Wow mfmaybe that payout will definitely help, even if not totally MF, not having a huge mortgage will be amazing. I’m glad you’ll be in a place not to compromise with what you want. Sending you more positive vibes and hoping your recovery continues to go from strength to strength.

Thanks both. I am certainly feeling happier about the build project. We now have a pretty healthy cash balance. We're managing to put a good bit of cash away each month towards it too (last month was £950). I reckon we can probably manage the rest with zero percent spending cards and potentially either an unsecured loan or borrowing from family. Self build mortgages are quite pricey and there are also a fair whack of fees so if we can avoid that then great. Ideally once the build is completed we will take out a small residential mortgage to pay off whatever we've not been able to cover; and will clear my small BtL mortgage on my flat too.

In normal money news, I am behind. I haven't even done my 2018 spreadsheet and I got paid nearly a week ago! Spends are actually ok I think, just food and fuel and horse costs. I rarely spend normal money out of my bank account as I'm still signed off work. On that note, back to hospital tomorrow to get the results of the latest test, which will determine how the next few months pan out. Oh, and there is Big News coming from work, that may be fortuitous, but more on that later.

Weather is completely shocking today. After some fun snow, today it's 10C warmer, and lashing. Bouncing off the ground type rain. Lovely.

Thank you. It went well. The test gave me a recurrence score and it was in the low category, so the Really Nasty Treatment isn't being done. Still got a short term treatment, and long term druggage, but that's manageable.

Thanks Brizzle. The weird thing is I can't even think of it as health issues because I feel so totally fine. Especially now I am fully mobile after surgery and can shave my armpit again:rotfl:. It's a very serious thing; but I'm determined to put it behind me as soon as I can and not live in fear of it returning (see above re my latest test).

    Thanks INOD. :)

Meanwhile I am in full on house mode. The plans are in from the architect :D. Some of the room dimensions weren't working, so I have figured out how to make the house less wide but a bit deeper front to back (ie square up some rooms that were a bit rectangular before). That way, I'm not doing too much to the overall space. However it is a bit  when you look at the size. So once he's made the adjustment I need to have a long hard think and see if I can squeeze off some space anywhere. The problem is, that if you want certain rooms to be big (say the kitchen), you immediately add that on to the upstairs too. Having said all that, it's about the same size as a showhouse we went to see recently, that we both thought was about what we had in mind. So perhaps it's ok; we just need to make sure we can afford to finish it :o

I have just spent a bit of time C/P the thread on to a word document due to the things I've been reading about threads being deleted. Would hate to lose this - some real life changing events in here.

Money news? No idea, I should probably check. I'm still in full house design mode.
