claiming I/s & hb changing tc after break up HELP

My now ex and I had been talking about splitting up and now it's actually happening he's found a place to move into but can't until the end of feb.

idk what to do I'm off work on ssp (after a accident) & considering not going bk a few ppl have told me to claim income support as I have 3 children. (1 under 5)

how do I claim this and when?! do i do it before he goes as ive read it takes a while or after?

also the form asks how much tax credits i get but this will change so how can i tell them the correct amount?!

do I do it now or do I have to wait til he's gone? sorry for the long post but I've never been in this situation before

  • you cant make a claim to I.S until he moves out of the house really. You could now but you would have to have a visit and a living together decision, to see if you are maintaining separate household under the same roof..

also if you are on SSP, when does it run out? this is more then the single I.S so if you are still entitled to it and its still being paid then your claim would be a nil

CTC amount does not effect I.S but WTC does so if you are iro of this then you would have to cancel it if not returning to work before claiming I.S
  • my current sick note runs out at the end of the month so it'll be up to the dr if he'll renew it

I just find all this confusing as I've never claimed before but what I'm more worried about is how ill pay my rent

I've been told it takes about 6 weeks for benefits to kick in but I have 3 children to think about how am I supposed to feed them?

Surely their father will help to feed the kids!
  • yes but he'll have his own rent to pay which obviously isn't as important as food but if we both get behind on rents it will be even more stressful
  • I would say if you are not fit for work then you would have to get another sick note until the end of Feb.
Your ex will then move out then you will have two choices.

SSP is more then I.S. You can keep on this for a total of twenty six weeks as long as you are still unfit for work
Apply for Income Based housing benefit to help with your rent.
Phone HMRC and notify them your partner has left the household and claim as a single person. You can still get WTC for twenty eight weeks whilst on the sick and CTC

When your SSP finishes you could go on to ESA if not still fit for work

Or you would have to finish work stop the SSP, claim I.S, phone HMRC and cancel your WTCs.
I dont know how long HMRC take to sort out new award s but I.S should be processed in about ten days.

I think you need to see CAB or similar to talk you through your options.

If your child is nearly five then you would have then to go on JSA when the child reaches five.and look for work
  • I think ill ring citizens advice

the reason I said I/s was because my youngest is under 1 so it would mean once its all sorted it'll be a lot less stress which I can't really deal with at the moment

Sorry if my post sounded abrupt.

Could you both go halves with the food etc for the children unitil you are both sorted?.
  • You have a lot going on at the moment OP
To go on I.S you will have to give up your job.
Whilst you are employed you can get SSP when sick.
    SSP is more then I.S.
so a lot to think about

You have FEB to think about thinks if you get a further sick note and stay on SSP.
  • thanks for everyone's help and no I didn't take offence poppy I understand your question

the reason I'm more stressed is because I have no savings to fall back on since I've not long finished maternity leave

I was just hoping because it takes a while to go through I could put in my claim so ill be getting it for when he goes

and like I said the form asks me me how tc I get but all this will change and if I sort tc first, it means waiting longer for everything else it's so confusing
