Cost of fitting new wing mirror?

The clips which attach the glass in my driver's side wing mirror to the casing are broken meaning the glass hangs out. I have my MOT at the weekend and suddenly realised this would be likely to fail it, so need to replace my wing mirror (I've already tried gluing it/other things to fix it into place, nothing's worked).

I've sourced a wing mirror but am wondering what the likely cost will be to fit it. It's a manual mirror on a 04 Fiesta- from what I can tell it shouldn't take long to fit (if I wasn't coming up to my MOT I would have a go at fitting it myself, but don't want to risk it)- am I likely to be charged a standard hour's labour rate or something else? (I know this is dependent on the garage I go to, but just looking for some estimates/opinions!)

The whole unit will be held on with 3 or 4 bolts, hex bits or screws...if you pull the plastic cover off on the inside you will see them. If the clips that hold the glass in place have brokened then you will need to replace the wing mirror unit.

Any local garage will do this for a drink £10/£20 if you don't have the tools.

Heck, I would swop them for a couple of diet cokes !!!

04 fiesta should be easy to do. Not as easy as foxy stoat says though. It requires removing the doorcard and that can be tricky.

If you want to save some time you're better off getting a garage to do it. Not all garages will be nice enough to charge you £20 labour for it.

These jobs are annoying and tedious. Mechanic will probably bill you for an hours labour.
  • Thanks both. It's not so much time as an issue, I just don't want to risk doing it myself, thinking I've done it right then get it to the test centre and it falls off or something.

Yes, the two garages I've just spoken to have said an hour's labour- I was hoping they might do it for less given that it's apparently simple/quick (if you know what you're doing). Though perhaps, like londonTiger says it's not quite as simple as I thought.

I met a guy a few weeks ago whose Merc w/mirror was wiped off by a Chelsea Tractor. Having looked at a similar one, the size! I'm not surprised it was smashed. It cost £508 to replace!! Personally I put mine in on country narrow rds and whenever I feel like it.
  • The door card will need removing first before you can unbolt the mirror. You could do it yourself there are plenty of videos on you tube. Just be careful the door card clips have a habit of breaking.
