Huge electricity bill!!

  • I appreciate all the replies. So it would seem the day rate is very reasonable, and the night rate is down to the immersion heater, and 3xstorage heaters using electricity over night? I guess we were just shocked to get such a large final bill.
  • Hi,

if your partner had queried the first account and got proper readings it wouldn't have got to this point.

20 day units for 15 weeks?

Her second bill was only £63 for 12 weeks when heating was being used most of the time.

If she's moving into a new place, tell her to check all estimated bills and to provide accurate readings to prevent this happening again.
  • Hi,

I don't understand the 'storage' heaters either.

Don't fully understand the storage heaters....

The one in the bedroom you could simply set on a dial to come on/off at a certain time - it definitely didn't release heat throughout the day.

This sounds like a panel heater.

The one in the living room had a digital display on the wall - again where you could select when the heating would come on and off. This one did release a small amount of heat throughout the day.

Don't know about this type with digital display, was it a 'Dynamic' heater?

The one in the kitchen was simply a on/off switch on the wall - no settings, no adjustments. This on also released heat throughout the day.

This sounds like a 'sensor' storage heater which automatically adjusts.

We're moving into a place together now, with central heating so no storage/panel heater issues! She couldn't check her meter readings because the meter was in the building next door that only the landlord had access to.

I did, I get that they come on over night and store that heat. Still a bit confused though. So when the control unit on the wall was set for the heating to come on between 7am-9am, it was simply using the heat it had stored?

Yes, exactly! It had been using the electricity to make that heat during the night but not using any while it was heating the room.

Should have just asked the landlord. She cannot be refused access to her electricity meter.

Storage heating is central heating. Panel heaters can be central heating. Insufficient data ;) Don't count your chickens.

Read your meters regularly - at least once a month and give the readings to your suppliers - that way you'll know how much you are using and will be able to check your bills. If your bills are estimated then make sure you get them revised the you won't get big ginormous bills out of the blue.

I'm in an all-electric one bed flat and my bills for the last six months have come to £189.

Is that from estimated readings or from actual readings?
