Just wondering if anyone here has had any luck getting a university to change their minds about an application.

I've just received an alternative course offer, and have been told that my personal statement was not focused enough on my course of choice.

The alternative choice is something I have no interest in, although to be fair it is slightly similar to my choice of course.

I'm thinking of calling them and asking (begging) them to try and fit me in for a quick interview. The course is something I care about, am extremely interested in and would do well at (or at least I think so, obviously they might not agree). I think if I get my foot in the door I should be able to persuade them.

Has anyone ever tried to do this? If so, where you successful?

Edit - Never mind, have just called. They have said no, but only because the course is massively oversubscribed. Anyone else with this issue may have a chance depending on the course!

Was it Social Work/Nursing by any chance? What about your remaining 5 choices? Did you only apply for one university?

Underlines the importance of your personal statement.

And I wonder what a "quick interview" might have achieved: to provide new information that had not been included in the statement, or to explain points that were not clear when written down? Either way, the weakness of the statement indicated poor development of the skills that are essential to do well on most degree courses. The best advice has to be to see if a suitable vacancy arises in 'clearing', and otherwise to apply again next year with a stronger statement.
