worth getting smart meters from BG?

I've been thinking of switching to BG to get the smart meters, and understand I'll then be locked to BG for a year, which isn't too concerning. However, after a year I'll want to switch to a cheaper and greener supplier, but my current supplier Ecotricity don't seem to support smart meters and say that new customers with smart meters will have them switched to dumb meters. Are smart meters worth it, and any ideas how many suppliers actually support them?

  • It does nt matter how many suppliers have smarts in your area are using them, smart switching is nt in yet, so, like mine has, they become a "dumb meter " on switching suppliers
Personally I like them, I see at an instant whats happening with money used per day/month etc. Theres a few people refusing them on various grounds so the MP s have allowed smart refusals to be ok for the time being. eventually tho the refuseniks will be facing ( I have heard ) annual meter billing costs of £60 a year

I have had my electric smart meter in since December and my Gas meter was replaced last week. I like being able to view my usage when i want. I can see it £ or kwh.
It's a shame that all the energy companies don't use the same systems so that you could keep the smart metering when you switch suppliers.

A smart meter is a dumb meter. What Ecotricity told you was that the smart meter can only be used by them in dumb mode, so it'll still need to be read conventionally. They won't physically change the meter back to a conventional one!
