nPower complaints

Hi guys I am having serious issues with nPower.

Moved in to a property 1st Feb 13, First bill received September....A wopping £1300!!! Theres only 2 of us and we are out 95% of the day, from 7.30am - 9pm.

On close inspection the start reads they had for us were nowhere near the actual, around about 5000kw outs. Called them, very helpful guy said an ammendment would be done. End of story.

So I have just received a bill £1200. This is our first proper bill after living here 2 weeks short of a year (appalling in my book) still with the wrong bl**dy reads!

After the first hiccup we've been religiously submitting reads every week via their app, you'd think someone could immediately see there was something wrong, our current usage is less than £2 but apparently from Feb, even during the summer this was above £4 a day!! I would love to know how I've managed to more than halve our energy usage during the winter months!

At the end of my tether, and seem to be talking to a brick wall.

Is it worth going to the Ombudsman over this? Surely it is not acceptable to bill someone for an entire year (incorrectly) and expect them to pay within 7 days?

  • Assuming you read the meter yourself correctly when you moved in, calculating your bill shouldn't be that difficult, even for npower! Meter reading today- reading when you moved in = Energy used. Multiply by tariff = £bill.

Don't call any more, write a letter headed complaint. npower then have 8 weeks to resolve it to your satisfaction. If they don't do this, then you can take it to the ombudsman.
  • Ive got a meter reading in a tenancy Pack which is definitely correct. It was prepared the day before we moved in.

nPower are also stating they read the meter 1st Feb, which they most certainly didn't.

My concern is if this bill isn't paid, they will cut me off? But I don't see why I should pay a bill that is glaringly incorrect.

Npower fabricated a 'npower read' in my case. I challenged them on this and they seem to have admitted it wasn't an actual read.

They gave me a supposedly corrected bill but that has a different 'npower read' on it for the same date (plausibly correct this time) but I am extremely doubtful it is an actual read. They ducked the question when I asked them whether a meter reader had actually read the meter.

Can you imagine the consequences if a customer fabricated a meter read, but they seem happy to do it themselves. Shocking.

I havent had a meter read in nearly a year of living here. Maybe I should challenge them on that!

I had this too. They had made an "actual" read on the electricity meter when I know they did not (it is in the house, behind a locked door). The reading they gave was higher than the meter was actually reading even several weeks later, when I got the bill. Had a lot of problems getting NPower to accept this as they said the reading was taken by one of their engineers and couldn't possibly be wrong!
