Travel Insurance for 16 year old travelling alone

Some MSE knowledge Please:Would really appreciate some help in finding companies that will insure a 16 year travelling alone from Britain to Canada for a stay of a month. So far I have only found the Post Office (a quote of £39.50) to insure a 16 yr old travelling alone. The couple of banks I tried couldn't quote online, confused kept coming up error and moneysupermarket wouldn't quote under 18. Where else do I try? Does this mean I have to telephone for quotes? In a pickle as my son is leaving on 9th July until 6th August so really need to get my skates on. And of course being on MSE cheapest place would be a bonus too! Any help is appreciated Loopy X

Have just organised travel insurance for my 16year old daughter who goes to a camp in Canada every year. I have booked for the 2nd year with admin@travel-insurance-web.com - you can figure out what their web site is. I took out the annual insurance as it was about £10 more than the single trip. All done on line and efficient. Never had to claim.

Our annual family travel insurance with Direct Travel allows my husband and all 4 children (all under 11) to travel independently of myself for up to 21 days. I know that is not long enough duration for you but there might be other annual family policies out there which meet your requirements. An annual family worldwide policy with Direct Travel costs £72 so perhaps if the 16 year old's family has other holidays planned in next year, maybe this sort of policy would be a viable option.

My daughter travelled alone to Canada a few years ago and the Post office worked out cheapest.

Karena she went to a camp in Northern Ontario (Fraser Lake?) and had a great time. Relatives over there picked her up from the airport and took her there but that's not an option now and I know she'd love to go back. Do you organise it all independently?

No, I have family there would meet her and drive her up. Most of the camps offer a meet service and will take them from airport to camp. This year she is a cit, and having a great time despite long day.
  • Thank you for your replys, very helpful did more searching last night. For my son I have found the single trip sufficient (we wont be travelling abroad again this year!) But will take this advice about annual trip for next year as the family will be travelling a couple of times together and individually so that option will be beneficial next year. I found out last night that my brother in law works for the Post Office and gets 15% off single trip and 25% off annual trip insurance through the post office and as a family member we are also entitled to the same discounts. Bargain there then!! So all you royal mail workers don't forget your benefits! Thanks again for your advice from one happy 16 year old jetting off to visit his grandad in canada for a month.Loopy X
