How do I find trustworthy and reputable contractors

I need to find a reputable and trustworthy contractor in the Saltburn by the sea area as I need some work doing to a house. it is almost impossible for me to find such a contractor. Anyone have any ideas on a trusted source and where I should be looking?

I have been let down so many times I don't trust my own judgement any more!

I need a roofer and a builder and a handyman.

Yes, and that's if they even turn up, it amazes me how in this day and age, with so many methods of communication, so called tradesmen can't be bothered to let you know they are not coming
