Balance transfer typed in wrong number

Just did a balance transfer online and realised I have typed in a wrong digit. Will it go through and transfer the money from someone else's account or will it let me transfer once I get my card?

  • Phone them first thing - ask to stop the transfer.
If it goes through you may be gifting a stranger a nice pressie!

Presumably you're on hold at this moment to your card provider?

If you're not, you should be!

    Hi Delly,

If the account you typed corresponds to a real account then yes it will go into that account.

If not then it will likely be held in limbo for a couple of days and then go back into the originating account.

My advice would be to contact the card company and explain to them giving them the account number you have sent it to - make a note of date, time, amount and account number you used as well as any ref. you added to the payment.

I once had someone deposit £50k into my account - I was contacted shortly after LOL

There are some safeguards in place for this making it difficult to pick a random correct number. Many credit cards have 24 hour service.though and you may have had no need to wait to phone them.

Good luck - I hope you get off with it!

If you only typed in one digit wrong I wouldn't worry. Credit cards have check digits, so that wouldn't be a valid number.

I rang them back and they have stopped the transfer, as soon as I receive the card I can do the transfer over the phone. So relieved. Thank you
