Settling a Default

I've checked my credit file with Noddle for the first time in a while today.

On there is a default from an old bank account I had, I didn't realise I owed them anything and haven't received anything in the post from them regarding it - however I moved house around the same time so thats probably why.

The Default is from December 2010 for £63. I no longer have any details for the account and can't find any.

Is it worth sending them a postal order or cheque explaining this with all my personal details on? Or just wait for it to drop off after 6 years?

The bank is Santander btw.

Maybe call them and negotiate payment on the agreement that they remove the default from your credit files. Worth a try and does work sometimes.

I didn't think they would remove a default after it was issued?
  • They might if you apologise, ask nicely and pay. Long shot, but worth a go.

Only other alternative is to SAR the bank and hope they screwed up by never sending anything to your old address. The account history will show letters sent, account closed etc.

    Thanks.

As it stands I can't find any account details for them, tried calling them and they couldn't help over phone. So I emailed them with all the details and they respond telling me to telephone them!

Going to dig through all my old bank statements over the weekend and see if I can find anything with a reference number on it! But given that it was from around the time I had my head well and truly buried in the sand its doubtful. Anyone would think they don't want my money!

Just a little update in case anyone has similar.

I emailed the query to the CEO email address someone else posted on a different thread.

Within 1/2 hour they'd called me with all the information and are sorting it for me.

Turns out all but £3 of the defaulted amount are charges by themselves, they're going to credit all of those back to me and hopefully sort out my default.

Thanks everyone - very happy now! and very impressed with Santander!
  • Glad you had a good experience with them. In my dealings with them, Santander are the antichrist.....
  • This is interesting as I found a default on my husbands noddle account with Santander that neither of us knew anything about and like you had no account information etc... we have written to them asking them to provide more details or remove it, they have responded saying they are unable to find details of it themselves and have requested we send a copy of the credit file where it states the default, which we have done and now we wait... Glad you're all sorted :)
