Anyone know how this works for a named driver?

Have 9 years in total on a policy were I was main driver for 7 and wife was named, however 2 years ago we switched and wife became main driver with me named.

Reason I ask is that am about to buy a 2nd car and am getting quotes that allow me discount for being named driver for at least 5 years.....as I inherited my wifes "named driver" status does that mean I have 9 years accrued as a named driver?

I think (could be wrong) that when they talk about "named driver", they mean that you have been named on an insurance policy, either as the policy holder or the second/third/etc driver. I don't think it is specifically saying that it only counts if you are the second/third name on the policy. You might want to speak to an insurance company to confirm.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Just off phone with one there, they say ncb only applies to policy holder, and even though i was policy holder for 7 of the 9 years thats basically tough luck....

When you say you switched main driver 2 years ago did you also switch policy holders.

If so, what happened to tne Ncd then?

If your wife became the policy holder then your 7 year NCD remains available to you. Most companies only accept it up to 2 years old, but coop do take it up to 3 years old and failing that a local broker (not Swinton) may be able to help get you some introductory discount.

Somehow the entire policy was switched to the wifes name, I can't remember I think it was done through Tesco insurance, but she is now the policy holder and has 9 years ncb.....I have 7 years on one bike and 4 on another, but apparently these cant be switched to a car, so cant go down that road either, so looks like i'll be starting from scratch car insurance wise....

The NCD should have gone down to 0 when your wife became the PH. How was it arranged that she kept the NCD? Was the change made mid term or at a renewal? Did you stay with the same insurer to do this or switch?

In theory you would still have the 7 years NCD in your name and if its under 2 years old then most will accept it. If its over 2 but under 3 then there is the Co-op

Most insurers will give you an introductory discount assuming you are claim free, no longer a teenager etc. Just getting a quote with these details will generate it, dont need to ask.

A few insurers will mirror NCD when you get a second car etc but these are increasingly rare and your best bet is normally your current insurers

Direct Line Group brands (direct line, churchill, privilege etc) do allow you to move motorbike NCD to car assuming its no longer in use on any bike.

Honestly dont remember how the switch was made, but she now has 9 years ncd from 2 years as policy holder....tried going through a local broker and have got a decent enough price to get me started on the road to building up my own ncd....the bike policy with 4 years bonus will be cancelled but in the past direct line brand quotes have been way too high for my liking.
  • Not sure what group Swiftcover is under but they allow motorbike NCB too.
