kitchen revamp - Window sill and tiling behind cooker

hi

we are in process of getting our new kitchen. currently kitchen is very old and has floor to ceiling height on all walls and window sill. need some help with couple of things. its a bit difficult to explain in writing so bear with me.

We are looking at tiling only above the hob.

1) Above the hob there will be extractor. i am not sure if normally entire wall behind the hob upto ceiling is tiled or just the "space between hob/worktop and bottom of extractor"

2) we aer looking at tiling pattern where we use two different colours. i am sure thats pretty standard. but how do we actually buy these? do you buy certain number of tiles for both colors or do shops normally sell a combined pack with both colours to cover a certain m2?

3) Any suggesions on window sill finish? We are having a upstand made of same material as the worktop. However i am really unsure what to do with window sill. ideally i would like tiles so we can put some stuff there which may be wet. But having tiles just in window sill will look quite odd i think. Builder is suggesting just a MDF board like other windows in house. I was unsure how much maintenance do MDF window sill require if we occassionally spill some water there or put wet stuff there?

Unless the whole of the kitchen walls are to be tiled you would usually tile up to the extractor hood.

When buying tiles you work out how many sqr metres you require or take your measurements to a tile shop who will work it out for you & then you would buy an equal amount of the 2 different colours of tiles you like. Most shops will allow you to return any complete boxes of tiles that are unused for a refund.

I'm not sure about the MDF issue, but know it is possible to buy moisture proof MDF, so perhaps this would be best for your window sill. The other alternative if you have uvpc windows is to have a window sill in white uvpc.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

My kitchen windowsill is the same as my worktops (I have upstands as well).

I like it a lot. It looks good and has the advantage of no grouting to get mucky and things can be stood on it without damaging it. Oh, and it'll never need painting.
  • Our kitchen fitter used an off cut of our oak worktop for the windowsill. It looks really good.
