Yes, they should, 10 days as it was. It has been allowed for years on a case by case basis (at our schools it was a standard yes except for near/on tests and the last 2 years of secondary for GCSEs) - it never took anyone much time to catch up. And not everyone will do it, certainly not every year to boot. If you consider the more realistic view that 1/3-1/2 will do it, many for only 5 of those days, every 2 years, it's not that bad.

Kids should be able to have holidays. And yes, people could plan, think ahead before they have children - but life changes, plans change, people get ill, lose jobs, all sorts.

  • Putting another slant on this, being child-free DH and I naturally holiday during term time because it's less busy and quieter....

I'm sorry but I don't want to be stuck for hours on a plane/train/coach with your children, or not enjoy a peaceful coffee/lunch/dinner/visit to a museum - it's my holiday too. :o

I have never ever had a holiday and am 40 next month. Did ne no harm. Taking a holiday is not a right it is a priviledge. Schols should fine the parents 5000 pounds if the child misses school. You want a chikd then follow the rules and get them to school

Couldn't agree more. I have always taken holidays in the term time for this reason. My OH and I took a UK break in June thinking it would be child-free. Not so, there were a number of school aged children charging around and screaming not to mention talking on mobiles. It's Warner's next time (adult only):D
