60 reg fiesta diesel - battery light

hello
my sister has a 60 reg fiesta diesel. Her dad went out to start it and scrape the ice for her this morning. The radio comes on automatically and he hit the 'max' button on the climate control. He says the front and rear heated screens didn't come on as you might expect. The lights are automatic too.
So basically everything is on (apart from the heated screens) and then my dad noticed the battery light, which would normally come on but go out when ignition is turned.
My sister drove it for a few miles but the battery light didn't go out so she drive home and nicked my mums car.
My dad took the car out later, but turned everything off (lights, heater, radio etc) but the battery light stayed on throughout.
What are the likely causes?
My sister has it booked in at ford dealer tomorrow. It is out of warranty (by 3 months) What should she expect to hear? Is there anything they might suggest which might be a money earner for them?
All help gratefully received as always
Phil
