Discharged bankruptcy & tenancy credit references

I was discharged from bankruptcy in September 2007 and my credit file has been clear since September 2013. My credit rating is now high and classified as good.

I have been renting properties since 2000 but they have always been private rentals. My partner and I are now earning well and want to move to a larger home. This is also a private rental however they have sent us a credit reference to complete.

I thought my bankruptcy was behind me however they have asked the question "have you ever been bankrupt". I obviously want to tell the truth but is this going to jeopardise the tenancy agreement even though my file is clear and my score is good? Does anybody have experience of this?

It could potentially yes. Some landlords will choose not to rent to someone who has ever been bankrupt.

But I'm sure there are many who will be prepared to rent to discharged bankrupts, especially from quite a few years ago.

You have to say yes, to otherwise say no is fraud.

Got to be honest though. These lettings checks are very basic as Experian have said. They'll only check bankruptcies and CCJ'S. Which will only be reported if they are still present on your file, yours won't be.

Although they may do an bankruptcy check, using a solicitor. I doubt it. Who knows?
  • Thank you. I plan to declare it and I will just have to keep my fingers crossed!!

Tenancy in partner's name only? Could that be an option? Or would that go against you?

Thats the problem with bankruptcy it sort of lingers forever. Plenty of complaints on that. Murder someone and you dont need to declare that forever. Never seen a job application asking if i had ever been a bank robber.

Maybe application forms for a bank job may though? :)
