Hi all,

Please can l ask if you're on gas central heating, what costs you the most at this time of year your gas or electricity?

I ask because for just over a year our gas consumption has increased despite us not using the gas anymore than usual. Our bill for December was £135 gas and £101 for electricity.

I suspected it was the boiler but l got our usual engineer to come and look Friday and there are no problems with that, no gas leaks either. Our meter is 8 years old and he said it could only be the meter? He also said electricity is usually always the bigger bill than the gas?

I just wondered what others thought, can meters go wrong and in the winter months our gas is 25-35% more than the electricity, is this normal?

We have a 3 bed bungalow which has cavity wall insulation and loft insulation.

ETA, our average daily consumption says we're using 21 units of electricity per day and 81 units of gas!

I'm on the best tariff l could get.

Thanks in advance x

Happy moneysaving all.

Meter units or kWhs of gas? 81 kWh is fine. It is unlikely you are using 81 meter units - are you sure it is not 8.1 metric meter units?

(I'd be more worried about the electricity - £101 is a lot for someone with gas central heating and gas hot water.) (Nearly three times the average.)

I'll keep an eye on that but it was over Christmas and we do have lights outside and we're home all day.... I don't use my tumble drier a lot either so it wasn't that.

Thanks nada, l think l did get it the wrong way round but I'll double check it tomorrow.

Thanks, In any case we've got to bring this down, as my job is going to have much less hours - we're on energy saving bulbs l use the tumble once/twice a week for towels and sheets, and if l can get them outside l will and just finish off in the tumbler.

    Happy moneysaving all.

I've got a 4-bed detached poorly insulated house with an old standard boiler and gravity hot-water system, with no TRVs and no motorised valves in the system The MOST gas I've ever used is 22 units (meter units ie. cu.metres) on the very coldest of winter days. Currently I am running at about 11 units per day. I keep my room thermostat at 19 or 20 degrees, depending on my mood.
So yes, 80plus units would be extraordinary. You're not being nobbled by gas thieves, are you?

It is obvious that the OP means 81kWh(i.e. approx 7 gas units) a day.

The OP paid £135 in Dec for gas. That at 4p/kWh is approx 300 gas units in the month.

At 81 gas units per day her bill for Dec would have been well in excess of £1,100.

As said earlier - a bill for £135 in December is not excessive for a 3 bed bungalow. The electricity bill of £101 for the same month is extremely high however.

That said the OP states they use 21 units per day - so around 600kWh a month - which shouldn't cost £101 as the OP is on the best tariff!

(If the OP is on the "best" dual tariff the cost will not be much off £100
    21 x 30 x £o.14 = £88 + £7.50 s.c.)

If you want to continue to use that much electricity then you must check taking each fuel from separate suppliers. A substantial saving can usually made by higher-(and lower-) than-average consumers doing that.

In my area(Midlands) there are a few dual fuel tariffs where the total cost would be under £80 including DSC.

Thanks nada, yes it's 81kwh per day for gas.

During the summer we used 10 units of electricity and 22kwh of gas per day which doesn't seem too bad?

It's shocking how much energy costs isn't it?

I'll look at some single fuel tariffs thanks, l always thought duel fuel was better but to save some pennies it's worth it.

    Happy moneysaving all.
