Cost of moving gas meter

I have been searching for info about moving my gas meter. I am in London in a very small ground floor flat and wanted my gas meter moved out of one of my kitchen cupboards (where it is a huge waste of space - I need to move it to be able to fit in a washing machine). I don't mind where they move it (one of the upper cupboards on the same wall, outside or wherever). Spoke to the National Grid today and was quoted £1700 to move it up to 2 metres. This seems absolutely EXTORTIONATE but it seems I can't go to anyone else as National Grid own the pipework. Looking around on the internet on various forums it seems that as recently as last year many people were paying less than a third of this to have their meters moved a great deal further. Have National Grid suddenly hiked their prices? Is there anything I can do? I cannot possibly afford to pay what they are quoting.

Seems entirely normal to me I'm afraid.
This was £1k in London 6 years ago.
It'll probably add recognisable value to the price of the property, so deduct that from the cost of the job.0 -
Its all depends where the control valve is situatedDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

I've just been quoted £1700 to have my meter moved up the wall a couple of inches.
When you say it all depends where the control valve is situated, what do you mean?
My meter is connected to the incoming gas pipe via a flexible metal pipe. I reckon if this was swapped for a slightly longer flexible metal pipe the meter could be moved up the wall without altering the incoming gas pipe. Would this HAVE TO be carried out by the National Gas Grid? Couldn't a Gas Safe gas fitter do this?0
