Amex Available Credit Query

Hi,

I successfully applied for and received my Amex Platinum Cashback card on Friday last week. By yesterday evening I had spent £1778.67 on the account leaving available credit of £221.33. My limit is £2k.

I am logged into my Amex account now and it's telling me my available limit is £1776.00. My credit limit is still showing as £2000 so its not down to a limit increase. I called them up and questioned it with a CSR. Basically although my limit is £2000 and my account balance plus pending transactions take it to £1778.67, I do indeed have available credit of £221.33 but what the Amex site is telling me I have available is what Amex would increase my limit by if I was eligible for a credit limit increase. So it would appear that they would increase your limit by approx the balance on your account. Is this correct and has anyone else seen/heard of this?

Thanks

Strange isn't it? Maybe its just how they work or what I was told is incorrect.

Me neither, just sounds like the discrepancy between payments being in limbo, they eventually load on a few days later and the numbers reconcile. See it all the time on my barclaycard (and even my current acc with DDs).

One of the reasons I got the charge card - no need to worry about any of that carp with making sure you stay within your limit during the 56 day period. just look at the amount on the card and as long as it's not fraudulent, you're set :D

When I first got it in Friday, I made two online purchases and my available credit reduced accordingly but that doesn't seem to be the case any more. Do you get cashback on the charge card?

You get membership reward points that you can redeem or convert to cash (I think). TBH it probably won't quite cover the annual fee as in Amex terms I'm a low spender, but I have no qualms paying for good quality backed products, ie the famed customer service that comes with the card.

The benefits aren't that dissimilar to my barclaycard, (extended warranty etc) but having dealt with barclaycard's customer service I don't know if I'd actually trust them to hold up with their promises. OTOH I have never heard of Amex letting people down, except for in isolated individual horror stories.

I have the costco one, and never seen it are you sure a shadow payment is not pending
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

This has fixed itself now, shows up the true available credit.
