I have operated the self scans with my bare wrist before as the heating at the store near work is always bloody broken! My touchscreen gloves do work on them and I got them in Poundland! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Hmmm, mine are finest Primarni, I need to change my glove supplier!0 -
I don't have any problems with the main functionality of the self service checkouts. However, in Sainsbury's (and maybe others) having to click finish and pay and then having to click go back just so the offers apply seems a little silly to me. Why can they not do it automatically?
Also the unexpected item in bagging area issue needs to be sorted. It tells me there's something there so I remove it, then it tells me please place item in bag, after asking me to just remove it! Doesn't happen very often (often enough to be annoying though!) but when it does it makes the supposedly 'quick' self service checkout very slow as you have to wait for a member of staff to help!
I do wonder whether these self service machines cause more problems than they're worth!0 -

This happens because the weight doesn't match. It is expecting you to put an item of a certain weight into the bagging area. So if the item you place isn't the correct weight, it complains. So when you remove it, its still expecting you to put something of the correct weight on
There can be a number of reasons that cause this, but the more common ones are when something is leaning on the scale, the product isn't the correct weight, or somethings too light to be recognised by the scale0 -

It will be automatic in a year or so, when they update the software.
A little annoying I agree. The other week I thought I spent £29. < my facethen it dropped to £20. A bit of a relief.
I normally automatically go finish and pay. Then go back, then finish and pay without even thinking most days.0 -

If the product you have placed in the bagging area is a prepack bag of fruit or veg or a large single item where they are all the same price - melon, cauliflower, pineapple does an unexpected item...., think about it, it's MSE as you got a much bigger bag or item for your money:D;):money:
When you buy a bag of carrots that says 1kg, that is the minimum weight. If the bag you picked up is 1.2kg, the self scan will think 'hang on, what's this extra 200g doing in the bagging area?' and then kicks off. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. i do try not to use them given that they've been installed to reduce staff.0

I gave up using them, when I was told that the reason I was having trouble (yet again) with one was that I was doing what it told me to do.If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

I use them to check my discounts as I go, by using the sub-total.0

Precisely! This has nothing whatsoever to do with improving the customer's experience. It is about eliminating human input in the transaction wherever possible, just as you find in the constant exhortations from utility companies and others to 'go online' when what you really need is to talk to a human being to get an answer.
We encourage this sort of thing at our own risk.0
