If the driver didn't know that they weren't supposed to drive into a brick wall at 70mph then it's not their fault.

If people are deliberately puttin unknown items into the bagging area because they like the sound of the voice that tells them off about it then fine, blame the customer. If the customer is doing what they think is right then the machine is at fault.

that isnt what you said in your original post :)

I agree. They are not good with those who arrive with their own bags. You put the bag on the right and they stop until you remove it. They are a real pain. Those who blame the customer for the problems are bound to be right some of the time but on many occasions its just bad design.

I think it might help if all of the supermarkets had a common design with the instructions and orifices in the same place.

The Waitrose system of a hand held scanner is so much better.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Waitrose hand held scanner system is repeated in most places now (Sainsburys (fast track) and tesco (scan as you go) same thing really. Won't be long before Asda have a version I bet.

    Just the dreaded rescan....

Customers that shop in pairs and one of them holds the handles to the carrier bags whilst in the bagging area to keep the bag upright. They don't understand that them holding the bag makes the weight unstable in the bagging area. It's like standing on one leg on your bathroom scales.

Saw this today - a customer has their own bags for life but puts their shopping in the carrier bags at the self scan and then put their shopping still in the carrier bags in the bags for life. Why??

They want to claim Reward points for using their own bag but still gain a carrier bag?
Extra weight of a BFL sets off the Till's "unexpected item in the bagging area" announcement?
BFL stronger and possibly more comfortable to carry but they use the other bag to protect the interior from drips (eg leakage from fresh meat or cleaning fluid from bottles) or protect new items from any contaminant in the BFL?

I pack into BFL in the bagging area and no issue with 'unexpected item'. The customer I used the example bought things like biscuits, tins and boxes of tea bags.

Another annoyance is that some machines think that "cash" means bank notes and not coins:

Notes given in change come out in a less obvious place to coins and someone in a hurry could pick up the coins and forget the notes. So, helpfully, an announcement tells you where the notes can be found but what it says is "cash is dispensed...".

Also some have slots labelled "cash" that jam when you try to insert coins because they expect notes. There are trays for inserting coins which one doesn't look for having found a "cash" slot. This caught me out when a new type of machine was installed at my local supermarket.

In my experience a session starts with the question "are you using your own bags?" If one answers "Yes" then one is instructed to put them on the Out shelf and indicate when one has done so. If this procedure is followed then I have encountered no issues with BFL. If, however, one decides later to introduce a BFL (or an additional BFL) then the extra weight is detected and questioned.

I'd like something that reminds me not to allow my 13 year old daughter to do the scanning. She always wants to and I always give way. I've no idea how but she seems able to screw it up several times every time she does it! Once we had to have the assistant over four times to reset the machine.
