Can I organise utilities and broadband before moving in?

Hi,

I've been given a move in date of Jan 31st (a week on Friday). To what extent can I organise the above before I move in?

Thanks!

You should be able to as long as the seller's have advised the existing companies that they are moving.

You'll need to call the existing companies when you move in with the meter readings and to advise that you want to stop the account. Then you'll need to call your new companies with the meter readings anyway so I think that overall it's easier to get everything changed over once you've actually moved in - to save on phone calls!

  • To arrange electricity and gas you'll need access to provide a meter reading, so this cannot be done until after you move in, however this is very easy to set up and providers are happy to accommodate people as they move. The day you move in take a meter reading and then contact the provider whenever (they may even send you a letter if the previous resident notified them).

To arrange broadband you'll need to find a provider and arrange an install date, this process can be started long before your move in date, you'll only need to have access to the property to have the service installed (if it's needed). Broadband installations can require weeks of notice (depending on time of year, your location) so ideally you should contact them as soon as possible so that it can be done as soon as you move into the property.

Example: I placed an order for BT broadband on March 16th 2013 and the earliest install date that BT could give me was April 12th.

Thanks for this. The property is empty at the mo, so electric and gas are not being used. I'm going to hopefully get another look at the property this week. Could I use those meter readings?

I arranged my broadband & phone line completely online before I moved in to the property, because it was empty and the previous owner had already stopped their phone, so it was available on the day I moved in.

I picked up my keys on a Monday, although I wasn't actually moving in for another 2 weeks and on that day, I took gas & electric readings & phoned the provider & set up an account immediately. The only worry was finding out which supplier it was because there had been tenants in before & the owners did not know current supplier, however there was a letter through the door from the supplier for the tenant with the logo on it, so it was easy in the end.
