Challenging council tax

Hello i wondered if anyone had any advice, I asked for my council bill to be look at and rebranded, as I'm in brand B as so our my neighbours. But I know that these houses in 1991 were under 40k, as I bought one same house the next road down in 1995 for 37k, but I'm confused that the council say I have no right of appeal. So do I just take this on the chin, as I think the local council are ripping a lot of people off, if the branding is base on the valuation in 1991.:(

The council have no say in the matter - if your in England/Wales you need to contact the Valuation Office Agency or in Scotland the Scottish Assessors Office.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Have you considered that the value of a house in the area may have been less in 1995 than it was in 1991?0

Thanks for the reply Noh, only by the valuations sites, like nationwide, is there any other way.0

Firstly - pay them what they ask. As long as they are charging the correct band stated then you have no argument with them. If you feel the banding is incorrect, then you take it up with the Assessor/Valuation Office. If they agree to change, you will be advised of this.
The defining way to check is to go to the library and ask to see the Valuation Roll, this will show what band the properties are that surround you. If you are all broadly the same, chances of a successful appeal will be slim unless there has been a material change.0 -
Thanks for this, yes the houses around me, are in the same band as me, but is there anyway finding out what this house worth would of been in 1991, and if it was under 40k is that enough to challenge with? Thanks everyone for your input.0

In most areas 1995 house prices were well below those of 1991. So if you bought a house for £37K in 1995 it would almost definitely have been worth more than £40K in 1991.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Right, thank you so much for that reply, is there anyway I can confirm that?0

Speak to the VOA. Although they can't disclose 1991 sales figures, they will be able to say whether or not 1995 values are lower than those of 1991.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Ok thank you will get onto that.0
