Child benefit - can they take this much tax???

I completed the 12/13 one a few weeks ago. This tax notice is the first thing I've recieved back so assume I haven't paid anything back yet.0

The 12/13 self assessment isn't due for a year!People are getting very confused here.
The deduction the OP mentions on his/her coding notice will almost certainly be referring to the "high income child benefit charge" which HMRC expects to be due in the year to which to coding notice refers. The figures provided make perfect sense for this.
If it had been for 12/13 it would have said "tax underpaid for previous years" or words to that effect, it wouldn't even have mentioned child benefit.
OP - when did you do the 12/13 self assessment? Did you pay the tax owed?0 -
If you did it online you'll have got a tax calculation - what does that say? It should say the amount you owe and whether they'll include it in your tax code or not (there's a question about this but I think if you do it after Dec then you have to pay what you owe).I completed the 12/13 one a few weeks ago. If you have to pay do it by end Jan or you'll get fined. They should send you a payslip. You can login to the self assessment site and check what you owe.0 -
2nd child was both in october.
I registered online but filled out the paper form. I'll have a look on line and see what it says as I haven't recieved anything from them. Thanks for the heads up!!0 -
Err... it's due the end of this month, ie in 11 days!northerntwo1 wrote: »The 12/13 self assessment isn't due for a year!0 -
The coding notice is for 14/15.blondebubbles wrote: »I got the calculator working that out to be
12/13 CB received £263.90 charge £89
13/14 CB received £1404 charge £477
Not sure how accurate that is though and that's based on £53440 for 12/13 and 13/14.0 -

It did. It came in on jan - march 2012. Unless I'm a year out. I know I've only to include 3 months not 12 but do get confused0 -

I do get confused. Why PAYE need to do this us beyond me. I know we are a year behind too. It's not fair really.0 -
Fair enough - it seemed you were implying the OPs coding notice is wrong.blondebubbles wrote: »You've said that repeatedly.
I am just providing info on what the charges would be for those years.0 -
Does anyone know how the pension would work? I can't afford to lose much salary at the moment but if it pretty much cancels out the child benefit tax then it may be worth my while but have no idea how to calculate what that amount would be.
Called tax office and child benefit today (as couldn't log on to site) and no one seems to be able to tell us if we owe anything by end of jan!0
