Another fan of the YMCA here - but it's the only place I've stayed in HK
Personally, when we were there, I was glad we were Kowloon side. So based on that, I'd go for Ovolo.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Can I ask why bylromarha you were glad you were Kowloon? We were initially going to go for Kowloon as thats what a travel agent recommended. But the more research I did the more I started to feel I may want to be based more in central! Did you use MTR as main transport or did you use trams?0

I've only stayed at the Shangri-La Hong Kong Island, but Kowloon is good for a few days, then explore the main island. The local buses are really good, so you can easily make it to Deep Water Bay, Repulse Bay, Aberdeen and Stanley. Big Wave Bay is a little more difficult to get to.
In Central, I'd use the escalators in the daytime, and buses and taxis at night, particularly after a night in Lan Kwai Fong.0 -
Thanks we're only there for 4 nights / 4.5 days - and we're spending one day at Disney (OH used to work for them so is keen to visit!) so we really want to maxamise our 3.5 days there - we want to do all the typical tourist things - SOHO, Victoria Peak, read on Star Ferry etc so really want to be in the place where we'll spend less time travelling.0

We did more things in Kowloon and it felt very easy to navigate. Crossing over is easy enough to do, but Kowloon felt more "us" and meant we cold walk to things we wanted to go to more than feel we had to take the subway.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Isnt the YMCA miles out?
Chunking and Mirdor are the cheapest places to stay, they're pretty much next door to each other and in Tsa Tsu Shim (or however its spelt)0 -

And much more interesting places to stay.Turning left avoids some of the idiots (only some)0 -
The YMCA Salisbury is next to the Peninsula, so no, not miles out, quite the opposite! Tsim Sha Tsui has heaps of hotels but we always stay at the YMCA although as suggested by OP it can be really expensive at times (we've always managed to avoid them luckily). We may go for an island hotel next time for a change, particularly as I've heard quite a few reports of ymca prices being quite happy.
I wouldnt worry about island vs kowloon too much, public transport is fantastic although I'd go central/causeway bay/wan chai on the island or TST in Kowloon (not TST east) only, just to mae it easy.
Yes Chungking etc will be cheap but I wouldn't stay there.0 -
