Monday 20th January - What small DFW things will you do today?

When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the Gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free...

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending:money:

    Good morning everyone.
I am in the pink = healthy and happy
the news said this morning it is a blue Monday with a lot of people feeling down. The 3rd Monday of January.

I will be glad when January is over. I always feel it is such a cold month and the down from Christmas.
17.3C here in the house. The CH was on for x1 hr earlier. Now off for the day. Yes, I am at home all day. I have got use to a cooler house, although I went MAD yesterday afternoon and had 1 bar if a electric fire on in the late afternoon.
I dread to think what the gas/electric bill would be if I did not keep an eye on the consumption and bill. Glad our house is well insulated.

Washing is done and I am going to put on the line as it seems sunny now the early morning frost is going.

    Checked postcode lottery. freebie sites.
Printed off the coupon for v-water www.sobe.co.uk to claim a FREE 500ml bottle of flavoured water.
Will look @ daily free books UK when the email comes through for FREE kindle books.
    Read the Mail online.

    Craft = knitting

Unsubscribed to some junk emails to hopefully stop them coming back into my junk folder.

Dinner = burger and roll & chips from freezer.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

    Morning all,
Such a bright frosty morning, I had to get outside. so have been down the garden with the compost, topped up the worm composter too, fed the birds, packed a load of recycled containers/plant labels away in the shed, defrosted the birdbath, broke the ice on the pond & pruned a shrub! Lovely to have some fresh air after the lergy!
    Today's small money-saving things:
*Nagged the lovely mr f for leaving the bathroom heater on all night.
*Did laundry overnight on Economy 7 tariff - all now on heated airer, the cheapest option given that it's too cold outside to dry anything. Re-loaded washer & set timer for another cheap wash tonight.
*No heating on downstairs till 5pm, unless I crack, but I'm fine while I keep moving around.
*Made tomorrow's packed lunch & work snacks.
*Made lentil roast, using the last of some ancient yellow split peas which take so long to cook they may as well be made from tungsten steel. Finally beat them into submission!
*Made onion gravy, which took care of some of last week's onions which were starting to look a bit ropey.
    *Did a few surveys.
*Renewed subscription to a diet magazine....even a renewal works out cheaper than buying it monthly.
*Arranged to visit parents before the end of the month to take nephews' very heavy birthday presents as they will see them before birthdays. I shudder to think what the parcel would have cost to post....I'm sure around £10 easily, so combining it with social visit will defo save money.
*Updated calendar......staying very organised is a really key thing for us in our money saving.
That's what I've done so far. Haven't really decided what best to do this afternoon but I don't have the car, & I'm not planning to go out as I want to save my remaining January 'spends' for meeting 'the girls' for coffee & cakes on Friday.
Ziggy - The magazine is called 'Sew Eco'. It seems to be linked to https://www.mycraftstore.com tho' I haven't checked that out yet. I don't know if it's a regular mag or a one-off, possibly the latter as it says 'Exclusive to WHSmith' on the cover. I got it from the magazine man on our local market. He has a huige selection of mags, some old, some just the previous month's edition & he sells them all at any 3 for £2.50. I've had some little gems from him & hate paying full price now! This mag is all about restyling & upcycling stuff you already have, such as old jeans into a bag, t-shirt into a different style of top, etc.
Must get some lunch or will be raiding the treats box....no, no, naughty foxgloves......

Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi All

So today I have so far

    1) Returned a set of electric beaters to Sainsburys, using my waranty, new set given instantly.
    2) Returned a hoover to Morrisons, which I had paid £20 originally. As it had gone up to £30 now (6 months later) I had to pay them £10 but better than buying a new hoover.
    3) Found the cheapest petrol around for my fill up, so got around an extra 5ltrs for around the same amount. FYI in London, its Morrisons at the moment.
    4) Planned meals for the next 2 days that we can all eat. I find the staggered meal times that the after school vs adult dinner time, very tricky to negotiate. Any tips from more experienced hands?

Now I have ***a rant*** coming Im afraid and need some assistance if anyone knows anything.
This month, despite our best efforts we have failed to make a payment to one of our insurance companies. Before I could take action they had tried again to collect the cash. Its £91.30. The company is RSA. Each time they try to collect, the bank applies a £25 charge, which they have very very kindly waived so far.
Today has been the first time I've had time and chance to deal with it. Having checked my paperwork I noticed the only number to call is an 0845 number, so I thought balls to that & went onto no more 0845 on the internet. No luck. Went to their corporate website & found a non premium number to call, which clearly says for all customers. Anyway, spoke to a guy who gave me attitude saying that it wasnt the number, & all he could give me was a prem rate number. I explained my case, that I was in financial difficulties, hence not making the payment & the thought of being on hold for 10+mins on an 0845 kind of defeated the object! He just said all he could do was try to put me through again, which he did, and it duly went to a voicemail. I've left a message & am sending a letter, complaining about the situation.
Now I know, they are planning to make companies supply a non prem rate number for customer service, but does anyone know where you can complain in the meantime? So cross. have been with them for around 10yrs & as it is a property with some issues (was underpinned before we purchased it, which a full survey did not reveal! so the only insurer we can go with is RSA who were the insurer at the time it had the issue) but this is the first time we havent paid.

And on a happier note, gosh the Nectar Adpoints do add up quickly dont they, have almost £5 off already! probably spent around 2 hrs to earn that, across the weeks.

    Happy Monday all.

    Bob
