Received Debt Collection Letter - No idea why

My son has just moved back in with us and has received a debt collection letter from a company that states the debt is related to Eon.
My son recently vacated a rental accomodation after 6 months but has never used Eon as his utility supplier. We suspect the debt relates to the previous occupier but as the letter is from the debt company how do we go about dealing with this.
He's obviously going to contact them this morning for more details but will they discuss it with him or just demand payment?
He has had no previous correspondence from Eon. Although he remembers receiving final demands just after he moved in which he sorted out on the telephone and heard nothing more.
My main concern now is that he is linked back to my address which may also impact my credit rating
