Received Debt Collection Letter - No idea why

My son has just moved back in with us and has received a debt collection letter from a company that states the debt is related to Eon.
My son recently vacated a rental accomodation after 6 months but has never used Eon as his utility supplier. We suspect the debt relates to the previous occupier but as the letter is from the debt company how do we go about dealing with this.
He's obviously going to contact them this morning for more details but will they discuss it with him or just demand payment?
He has had no previous correspondence from Eon. Although he remembers receiving final demands just after he moved in which he sorted out on the telephone and heard nothing more.
My main concern now is that he is linked back to my address which may also impact my credit rating

Should not impact your credit record or rating, as they are done on the person not the address.
Letter here that can be adapted and added to if needed.

Hi hollie
If your son contacts us, we can tell him what the debt refers to.
I'd suggest he lets us have a copy of his Tenancy Agreement. If, as you suspect, the debt belongs to a previous occupier then, sight of the period where he was responsible will help sort this out.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction.
