Folder share over web

I used to use a program a few years ago which would allow me to share a folder on my machine over the web. I seem to remember I gave friends an address which included my ip address. They could then see, download or upload files to the shared folder. I believe you could also password protect access.

Does anyone know what this software is called or know of anything similar please?

I dont know what piece of software you were using but I can tell you one way of doing it.

If your pc is an ftp server, it allows people using an ftp protocol to access specified folders on your machines either anonymously or with different permissions which they can then use. I.e you could give the user "mateJohn" access to read/write in a folder on your c drive while anonymous can only read.

Any simple FTP server will do this :) Maybe google "Free FTP Server"?

Limewire is a p2p client, in which you can search for files from all users, or you can direct connect to another ip address and download whichever files you please from that user. Not so sure about password protecting it though.
