Parking charge

Hello guys
New to the forum and this is first post
I recieved a parking charge from euro car parks for parking on. 4th December in a retail park and over staying by 35 minutes
Initially I ignored it as previous years
Once a second letter came through telling me I owed more
I looked into it and found this forum so reading through advise here
I contacted the land owner in this case sainsburys who in turn contacted me back an told me to pay the fine issues them with confirmation reciept and they'll issue me with a store credit to the amount of the initial parking charge.
That can't be right surely I shouldn't have to pay anything for a FREE car park? Which is still in a poor state of repair and I'll marked bays anyway.
Looking for some further advise do I pay the fine and try and get the company to agree to the initial payment and therefore get money back albeit in a weekly shop amount
Or so I take it further?

its not a fine for starters
and there will be rules imposed on the parking , free or otherwise
