pvr's are usually a much better option, if a little more money

if you do buy a hd, get a portable 2.5", no extra power needed. Also quite useful for backups..

Have a pvr, but as the TV has record facility I thought it would give an extra element, but it seems not as you can only record what you are watching or something if you go out and you want to record an extra prog re the pvr.

I thought the general consensus was to buy one with external power? Also from the User Guide: - It is recommended to use a USB hub or HDD with power supplied, (if the power supplied is not enough, the USB storage device may not be detected properly).

  • Most smart TVs format the drive before you can use it on the TV. So it will format the whole drive.
You cannot use that drive in a PC or another TV (even the same make/model) to play back - to use it there you will have to re-format the whole thing again.

My TV recommends using the USB 3 o/p for a stand alone HDD, 900mA available as opposed to 500mA on USB2 - you don't want to muck about with another power supply ! there are enough cables already :rotfl:

I hung (literally) a WD HDD on the back of my Panasonic - works beautifully !

The TV will access any USB device that's fat32 for playback.

But for any DVR ability, the TV will format the device to a format that only Linux mac machines will read.

So in effect any USB device should work.

Also check if you can plug your tv in to your network.
If it's smart with a network port you can usually share a folder on you PC and the TV can play back movies from there instead of measing around with copying the movie to USB then plugging it into the TV.
That's how I've set up my media sever. Don't need to worry about USB sticks. If it's on my PC I can watch or listen to it...
