Computer looking for proxy server

Options
Every time I go on to the internet I am plagued by connection problems which are solved by going into the LAN settings un Connections and unticking the box that tells the computer to look for a proxy server for LAN settings.

Unfortunately I cannot apply this, so have to do this manually every time I use the internet. Is there any way that I can set this option as default?

    Unfortunately I cannot apply this,

Uncheck the setting & click OK. The LAN settings dialogue box should close. Click Apply > OK to close the Internet Options dialogue box.

What computer is this? What operating system?
Is it a business computer or a personal one?
How is it connecting to the Internet?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
  • When I close the LAN settings dialogue box the apply option is not available or I would have selected it.

My computer is a personal Dell inspiron running windows 7.

How is it connecting to the Internet? Is it over wifi, or cable?
What sort of router are you using?

  • Landline via BT home hub. It only started doing this a short while ago - not sure exactly when as I use my laptop more than my desktop, but certainly was 2 years without this problem.

Just to be sure we're on the same page, I'm talking about Apply > OK on the Internet Options dialogue box after clicking OK on the LAN settings dialogue box.

Is there an address/port configured when the proxy server is set?

Download MiniToolbox from the link below & save it to your desktop.

    LINK
    • Double click minitoolbox.exe to run it.
    • Check the following options
    • Report IE proxy settings
    • Click the Go button
    • When the tool finishes, notepad will open. Post the contents of that notepad report

I had exactly the same on a laptop a few months ago and it happened whether I was using Firefox or Internet Explorer. I was running Vista at the time.

I suspected malware but couldn't detect it through any of my usual means, so just lived with it for a while. The laptop has since died and been replaced (now running Windows 7) and the issue hasn't reappeared so not sure what the root cause actually was.

It seems fairly prevalent though and if you do a search for "proxy server check box" or something similar, you might find this which helps:

Could you do a System Restore to a time before this started?

I realise this does not give an answer to what is going on, but it should stop it happening.

This happened to me too only a couple of weeks ago!

After reinstalling Windows 7 and nearly pulling my hair out with the time taken to download Windows updates, and finally having NO internet, I got on to my ISP, Virgin.

After the first two calls to two different agents, an engineer was booked. As one had mentioned that my modem was a really old one....I use an Ethernet connection.....and I had a new one, I connected that one to my system....still nada!!

I phoned Virgin again as I now had a fresh Windows 7 factory restore installed and a new modem, and the 3rd Virgin agent, a wee Welsh lassie, managed to sort it out.... it was exactly the same problem that others here had experienced... and was sorted out by doing what waddler_8 recommended.

The funny thing was that the lassie said I was the second person with this problem that she'd helped fix that day....the call before mine...and that she'd never come across it before!!!

I wonder what is happening as so many people are suddenly having this problem, who have never experienced it before...I never have in my 9 years of using a PC!
