couldnt afford to have a hands free installed so I made my own.

I bought a pc conference microphone and lead splitter from maplin . I already had a standard audio lead. removed glovebox in my focus removed av socket , plugged standard av lead into it and fed wire behind dashboard and out into storage area under stereo . Stuck microphone on to dash with supplied small sticky pad , fed wire into same storage area . connected both wires to splitter , single jack end in to phone ( iphone 5s ) I have enough wire to put phone pretty much wherever i want , and when not in use the wire is stored out of sight behind the storage area door. Works great (have to have stereo on aux , but that doesnt bother me as i always listen to music from phone anyway ) incoming calls come through the speakers and i have auto answer active on my phone so it automatically answers after 3 rings. Totally hands free. probably been done before , but well proud of myself lol. The microphone is very small and unobtrusive but is great , i dont even have to raise my voice !
saved a packet !

Your links are messed up. SVGA splitter box £39.99. Iphone cases?

You could have bought a bluetooth handsfree kit for less.

That's very clever, true moneysaving, well done.

You can ignore those who pour cold water on your effort, there are many who will find this tip useful.

They're not the OP's links, they will have typed just normal text and advertising software has picked up what it thinks are suitable keywords and converted them to shopping links.

I don't think MSE hot links, maybe ops hidden agenda is placing some affiliate links around the Internet trying to earn some commission

Admittedly they don't look like the links normally added by forum software but it doesn't look like the OP would have chosen to add them as the first one is for a completely different item and the second is a very generic term both of which are the sort of link I'd expect automated software to add. If the OP added them it would have made sense to link directly to items they were recommending as that would increase the chance someone would buy the item and thus gain the OP commission.

  • lol , why would i add a link ( which i cant as a new user anyway ) for something totally irrelevent to what i described . I was just sharing a tip which incidentally will work on any phone with a 3.5mm jack socket and any car radio with an aux socket

That's what I thought but may be worth deleting the formatting that has added the links from your post.

the problem is handsfree technology isn't just about the microhpnes and speakers. Noise cancelling is a big part of it - without noise cancelling your caller will hear a lot of the ambient noise. Micrphone being mounted on the car means that it will pick up a lot of the cars vibration noises. Stark difference between a proper handsfree kit and a DIY hackjob.

Call someone using your handsfree while driving and get them to record your call. Compare with those standard £20 personal handsfree kit while driving. I have a £20 handsfree and the call quality on the other end was surprisingly good - driving down the motorway the other party could not tell (assumed I was in a quiet room).
  • already checked , quality is great . had one of those 20 quid ones it was rubbish . I also wanted the calls to be through ny car speakers . worked for me !
