Getting Compensation - best way to do it?

After finding mouse droppings in a sealed pack of Morrison's raspberries, I went through the procedure of contacting the food authorities and I also phoned the manager at Morrisons and the investigation took its course.

This month I got a letter to say it was indeed mouse droppings. The local Council food safety team aren't going to proceed against Morrisons with any further action as they have promised to deal with an infestation at the warehouse themselves.

When I heard from Morrisons initially, by mail, I got no apology, and it just mentioned that compensation would only be discussed following the investigation. It was very vague about that.

Since then I have heard nothing further. I wonder what is the best course of action to pursue any compensation that is due to me? Thanks in advance.

what is the compensation for? I.e. what do you believe is due to you and what are you looking for by way of compensation?

I imagine you got no apology as you were immediately asking for compensation. I can certainly imagine your conversation with Morrisons.

You did not suffer. You had no loss.

I hope you got a new packet or a refund, as that's all you will get. Maybe a £5 gift voucher to cover your petrol and minor inconvenience.

What on earth do you think you should be compensated for? How has your life been affected by this trauma.

OP makes mention of compensation that is due to them, so I assume by compensation they mean a refund for raspberries.

Whilst selling a defective product is in breach of Consumer Protection Legislation as you were not injured (I'm sure you would have said if you were) you do not have a actionable claim under said legislation

You do have a claim under Section 14 of the Sale Of Goods Act in that it wasn't fit for purpose. This should be enough to get you your money back and probably some nice vouchers as a good will gesture...

Probably not what you wanted but hey that's life !

You will probably get a "thanks for bringing this to our attention" letter and a voucher for about £10.

What else are you expecting ?

I'll eat my favourite shoes if this is correct :P
  • I didn't "ask for compensation" at all. In fact I was more than polite and even helpful in my phonecall to the Manager. He thanked me profusely for bringing it to his attention. Although I didn't mention compensation at any time, and didn't even ask for a refund (and haven't got one) THEY mentioned it in their response. My only question was how best to go about reminding them of that.
  • Oh and by the way, the tone of several replies here is that I'm a money-grubbing complainer. That is simply not true. It wasn't pleasant finding a mouse had pooed in my raspberries, but I'm not asking for a new house here - just a little respect please. All I asked for was a bit of advice to see WHAT, if any, were the possibilities and how best to go about it.

I'd just email them saying something like "I am writing to remind you that I have not been offered a refund for this product as of yet". And if you want to be a little cheeky, could even just add somethin along the lines of "Under the circumstances, I also feel a goodwill gesture is in order" or if you have incurred unavoidable expenses in dealing with it, something like "I would also like to be reimbursed for expenses reasonably incurred by myself in bringing this matter to your attention".

I daresay you wont need to ask for the goodwill gesture though as most supermarkets are pretty good at providing them without asking.

To be fair to the mouse, I don't think they were your raspberries when he had the poo.
