Is a newly installed itunes slowing me down?

I haven't used itunes and my library within it for a couple of years, that is until last night. When I tried, something stopped it. A box told me something was no longer installed. Via start> all programs = nothing, then I did start > search, but still this box appeared. I decided via remove as per add/remove, uninstall itunes which I did.

Then googled for itunes and installed it from scratch. Oddly enough when it was ready and I saw a slightly different layout, ALL the music of mine in the library was there. So all is now well.

But, like all good stories, there's a but. Today I have noticed a considerable slowness as I go about surfing. Each site I visit is taking a noticeable longer period to arrive. I am wondering if itunes has anything to do with it. Do you?

Do a Ctrl Alt Del to bring up Task Manager and then look at Processes. See if iTunes is a running process and whether it is taking up a large percentage of CPU. It's possible iTunes is re-indexing your library, looking for latest cover designs etc.

Also look for 'distnoted' in Task Manager. For some reason this is always left running after I run iTunes, and it eats most of the machine's CPU until I kill it.

This is territory I've note been before, but did it. I found itunes helper in the list, at the bottom it said processes 86 cpu 13% physical memory 57%

does this tell you anything, or have I done it wrong. will now follow next post.

I clicked on each of the headings and couldn't see distnoted at all

It says iTunes has always been a crufty bit of software, and is for some reason using over half your memory, which means other applications might have to page to disk.

Unless you have to use it, you can remove it and reinstall next time you need it. Killing the process oughtn't cause problems but without scanning the process tree may leave a 'memory leak' orphan child process

I am greatly encouraged by your post. What I found odd was that even though I had removed itunes wherever I could find it, when I had reinstalled it, (not expecting to find any of our music), our albums appeared. Does this struike you as odd ?

I am quite happy to remove itunes as I don't anticipate using it much after tomorrow. The reason for that is that my wife wants me to update her shuffle tunes so I have removed what she dosne't want on itunes and aim to reinstall the new list on the shuffle tomorrow, after which, itunes on the laptop can go.

This is incredibly vague. What "something"? I'd be amazed if you receive any useful replies without stating your Operating System version, iTunes version, QuickTime version (which iTunes requires) and Web Browser name and version (as presumably you are not "surfing" with iTunes).

Oh to be converscent with technology in order that communication could be easier.

The A box told me something was no longer installed. could have been explained thus :- a pop-up notifier informed me that (there followed numerals/letters which made no sense) was installed. In hindsight, perhaps I should have made a written note of the numerals/letters.

As for anything else. Itunes is working and all is now well, thanks for your concern.

PS, having just had a quick look at your website, huh, my problems are nothing compared with yours.
