Car insurance for a couple of months

My wife and I each have a car - I use mine to commute weekly to work and she has hers for the daily school run. We traded in a 4x4 for the two cars when I got posted away. Now my posting is coming to an end and I will be back on the bike to commute. The intention is to trade both cars in against a 4x4 for the family again. The problem is that insurance is due on both cars, but the requirement will only be for a couple of months before we trade in to one car. I am concerned about the penalties for withdrawing from a policy 2 months in and wonder if there are any companies which cater for shorter term insurance?

There are companies who do short term temporary cover but you will probably find it cheaper overall to take out a 12 month policy and swallow the cancellation costs rather than go down the temp cover route for this length of time.

Also chdck if your other policy will let you add the second car for temporary cover.

Quentin, thanks for the advice. I will get the cheapest quote I can for 12 months, then ask my current insurer and my wife's insurer what they can do. I will of course let you know the outcome.
