We'll need another thread of wheezes to foil their charges. :)

Yes indeed. These changes are hard for a relatively small investor to understand.
  • Yes, if you leave cash in the account they'll use that to pay fees but if that's your ISA account you''l be reducing your ISA pot. If to avoid that you keep a non-ISA fund and share account for paying fees you'll have to keep a minimum of £50 in it or they'll close it and charge you a £30 account closure fee.

yes, perhaps they could improve how this works.

at the moment, if you're paying the £1/£2 per month platform fees, you can opt to have them collected in the first place from your fund&share account. but i'm not sure if this is an option for the new charges (they don't mention it), though it says they will fall back to collecting fees from the fund&share account if there's no cash in the account the fees relate to.

and then there's the problem with keeping a fund&share account open just to pay fees, when you'll eventually have to pay £30 for the privilege of closing it.

I'm still not finding HL more expensive for open ended funds after March even assuming the standard fund percentage of 0.75% plus 0.45% for the platform and capped ISA/SIPP charge.

they will generally be a cheaper than before for open-ended funds (except trackers). but more expensive than some of the alternatives - e.g. charles stanley would generally have the same fund for 0.75% plus 0.25% for their platform.

And Charles Stanley only have a £10 transfer out per fund fee, compared to £25 at HL, should you want to move later.

They do in the FAQs under - How does my 'Suggested Minimum Cash Balance' (MCB) work?

Please note we always deduct fees from the account they were accrued first of all before looking at the Fund & Share Account. It is not currently possible to have all fees collected from the Fund & Share Account in preference to your ISA or SIPP

I dont understand the basis for the iii figures. Where do you get the 1.03% from?

I also notice that HL deal in 2500 funds, the next largest Interactive investor less than 2000. Most platforms offer much less.
This is very important. I don't do exotic funds but two of mine I can't find that any of the smaller platforms do.

HL do have one of the best websites. For some, that may be worth paying for. For others, it won't be.

How do the rivals' websites compare to HL? My current estimate is that the changes will be fairly cost neutral to me and I wouldn't want to change to a worse online service unless there was a significant cost saving.
