Hi
My new windows 8.1 OS laptop keeps giving me a message that the firewall is switched off.
I then tried to download Sygate, but was told it was incompatible with Windows 8.1.
Can anyone recommend another firewall please?
Thanks.

Turning Windows Firewall on or off: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/windows-firewall-from-start-to-finish0

In my experience, if your Firewall keeps switching itself off I would run virus and malware scans immediately. (Use Malwarebytes anti-malware but update its definitions before scanning.)
Even if you find nothing I would use System Restore in Safe Mode and go back to WELL BEFORE the problem started.
Won't do any harm and might fix it.
For an alternative Firewall try the Comodo one but without using the anti-virus part of it.
I have that Firewall myself (in Win8) but use the free Avast for anti-virus duties. You can lose a loose goose.
You cannot loose a lose goose.
Get it? Now use it before you lose it.
or - Try using it - not losing it.
