Utilising Tivo 1TB HD

Finally dumped Virgin after 18m of the worst BB experience you could ever imagine!

So now I'm thinking of cannibalising the Tivo and taking the HD out, formatting for my Macbook and using as an external HD.

Has anyone done this, and what kind of caddy would I need please?

Thanks

    You'll be in trouble!

When we cancelled recently, they specifically told us we could keep the box and they wouldn't want it back

The rental for storage around these parts is expensive!!

  • I'd double check that if I were you OP. I just left VM and they were very adamant they wanted their kit back. I imagine those Tivo boxes cost a few quid so I'm surprised they'd just let you have it.

You surprise me. They usually stick them in the back of the van to swap out for any faulty ones.

What sort of box was it though? If it was an old V+ box or one of the even older VM boxes they probably wouldn't want it back. However I would guess they'd want a Tivo back.

    Both
We kept the V+ when we upgraded to the Tivo

The difficulty with taking a drive from a device like this, where it has a non-Windows or non-Mac operating system is getting a PC or Mac to recognise it when you install it as a secondary drive or connect it with a caddy to the PC/Mac.

If the PC/Mac won't recognise it, you can't format it.

I've no idea what drives they are but often the drive manufacturer have tools available to configure it

... and often those tools require the drive being worked on to be the primary drive in a PC, whilst they run from CD. The tools won't run against a drive in a secondary bay or in a caddy.

So without a spare PC, or removing the current primary drive from a working PC.....
