At the hospital I go to, you have to show proof so wouldn't be able to lie.

Proof when claiming mileage is never asked for in my experience. Besides which what proof could you supply specific only to the mileage claimed?

You could... you could fake taxi costs / receipts and use a free bus pass, sadly I knew someone who did that, and they did not have a care in the world!

That's the norm for my neighbours where I live. They use their free bus pass and swear blind that they used the car (always making sure that you have the car keys in your hand, and tell them that you have a Blue Badge!!).

Not bad going 42 miles round trip nets them £6.30!!

I've even heard of a claim for car expenses of 596 miles round trip giving them £89.40, but using National Express at a cost of £20!!!

We used to claim mileage & carparking fees from our hospital's cash office. First time we claimed, they went onto google maps to determine the mileage and noted that down on a claim card; then each time, we could hand over the appointment letter, claim card, parking ticket & NHS prescription entitlement card to get the mileage & charge refunded.

Occasional times when the office was closed, we'd just hang onto the appointment letter and claim the next time we visited.

Did you claim for the mileage but use your free bus pass instead?

I'm sure they'd have been the first to moan if there was any word of the refund system being removed too!

Like I've just said on the fuel forum, this low level type of fraud will always continue, that is until they do actually remove the refund system.
  • blimey didn't know you could get travel fare refunds, been going a lot, cost over 20 pounds per week. :(

oh well I've managed without claiming back, so guess I'll carry on.

You can also claim them if you have certain medical conditions, such as cancer. I know at the hospital I sometimes attend, it's not based on income. Not happy that it doesn't include those of us with long term serious neurological disorders though - I can claim bus fare; but not parking.
