A good cheapish cat food?

Whats a good cat food I can feed my little ones, (not my kids honest), something reasonably cheap, but cheap and good, not cheap rubbish, high protein and sugar free. Does anyone give their cats a part raw diet, I looked into a complete raw diet a while back but it was too complicated making sure they got enough of all the right things.

Prior to putting mine on a raw diet, I was feeding them pets at home "purely" kitten pouches. They loved these but I was worried about the quality of the meat as it's manufactured in the Far East........

These worked out at £4 for 12 pouches when bought online.

I then researched, and read a thread on here, about a raw diet and haven't looked back. Natural Instinct raw cat food isn't any hassle at all. The food comes frozen in 500g tubs and I just take one out, leave it in the fridge and portion out at meal times. £30 worth feeds my two cats for around 6 weeks. They love it and I love it because it's hassle free, they no longer pester me when I'm eating and their poops no longer smell!
    I have a simple philosophy:
Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches.

  • Errrm....

Highest commercial-you-can-buy-it-everywhere cat food I found was Sheba, tender terrine stuff etc. nothing but protein and minerals. I'm sure that higher exists out there, but I'm not sure how cheap it is. Bozita is good, the tins have a very high protein content and few additives, no grain etc.

In terms of raw, Natural Instinct is a good commercial brand that comes frozen with all supplements pre-mixed in. Ready made, basically. You could also try some home made raw with this powder called fellini, it supposedly contains all supplements in powder form and you just add some of that to your home made raw stuff.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Our cat gets Hi-Life and Feline Fayre pouches from the supermarket. They're around 70% named meat content, and cost between £3 - £4 for a box of 8 or 12 85g pouches. When we're feeling generous (and make it to the pet shop) she gets Natures Menu (£6.59 for 12 100g pouches).

Hoping to go raw eventually, but madam isn't too keen at the moment!
  • Do you feed the raw food inside, do they make a mess of it? I've given them raw chicken wings before and my little man loved it, crunched up every last bone, but I gave it to him outside as he dragged it all over the place. I'll look into it though, sounds good.
  • The raw is fed just like any food, it's mince and is no messier than any other cat food.

I thought your not supposed to give cats bones as they can be sharp and get stuck in their throats.
You can get chicken breasts 3 bags for £10.00 from Iceland at the moment. No bones are in these.
  • Best place for wet foods is Zooplus

Loads of great foods to choose from

Re raw, MHO is that unless you do it wholeheartedly and ensure they get the right balance, a bad raw diet is worse than a good wet one (the odd chicken wing etc is obviously OK & great for their teeth)

In the supermarkets, probably ones like Butchers Classic (which has no grains in) is around the best & cheap!

Raw chicken bones are OK. Cats are known to eat wild birds, bones and all and a chickens wing is no different. Cooked bones are not.

If you're going to feed a raw diet, it has to include bone

Archie isn't raw fed but when he went for his booster a couple of weeks ago and the vet checked his teeth, she was amazed how clean they were (this happens every year :)) and asked if he'd recently had them cleaned as there wasn't a single bit of plaque on them

They've not been cleaned but he is a prolific mouser :D - and, as the vet said, there's nothing more natural a diet than that!

This fellini powder looks like a good way to get into feeding raw food.

My cat is a great mouser too, I just wish he'd eat them not leave them in my bathroom. :(
