Should I keep it or replace it?

I've just had the alternator go on my 2009 VW Polo Bluemotion2 (1.4 TDI). A few months a go the DPF sensor went already and am starting to wonder if this is going to be the start of a string of problems. It's done 53000 miles now.

I need the car to get to work and can't really afford to be stranded so I'm wondering if I should replace it. Now I know that it will probably be cheaper to keep it, but how likely is it that it'll become unreliable? (This is the first car I've owned from 1 year / 1000 miles old)

Assuming you're otherwise happy with the car I'd keep it (although I havd no specific knowledge of typical faults on your car).

Yes no real reason to replace it other than wondering if I'll be stranded again soon

2009 is still pretty new, and 53000 miles is nowhere near the expected lifetime of a modern car.

I've bought cars much older than that, with much higher mileages, and had years of life out of them.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • As long as you do the mileage to warrant owning a diesel, then keep it :) Better the devil you know, as you could get another car and have to spend £500-£1000 on it straight away.

That's nearly new! I'd take it off your hands at that mileage.

I wouldn't worry about the DPF sensor as it's a fairly common failure in VW based cars including newer ones. No car can be guaranteed to be 100% reliable so unless your mechanic thinks there is going to be further problems with the car I wouldn't get rid of it.

I'll admit I was annoyed with my car when the DPF sensor failed the night before a very long trip (which I had to do in an auto Yaris with a 1.3 engine, argh) but the car hasn't let me down since then.

  • hhm word from the garage: the battery light is off, alternator is charging fine, battery fine, nothing wrong with it....

Turns out they haven't hooked it up to the computer yet so that's a job for tomorrow, fingers crossed they find it!
