I hope not.
I don't like local shops, they are expensive and it means I have to walk there, lug home a shed load of food from at least 3 or 4 different shops in whatever evil weather is thrown at me.. I can possibly manage to carry food for 2 or 3 days if I take a pushchair with me. I cannot carry milk or anything heavy and really struggle to walk unaided for any distance.
Little supermarket / express stores are rubbish they take advantage of non-savvy shoppers, those out to top up or emergency/impulse buy and rely on them popping in and buying excess stuff.. I don't go to them unless I need middle of the night (after 8pm) milk refill from sains.

Tesco are the second largest food retailer in the world behind Walmart, Lidl is 6th biggest and Aldi are 8th........so Tesco and Aldi are among the biggest food retailers globally-

I had to go today as it was the only day someone could take me down, normally I go mid week. I don't know if Aldi is like it every Saturday but I've honestly never seen it so busy, the car park was packed solid. We had to go around a couple of times before we got a parking space. I don't like crowds at the best of times and I didn't even need that much. I won't go again on a Saturday, I'd sooner go without. I would say the only thing that will stop the big supermarkets would be something better ...On line is a serious threat ,,But is nothing more than a service provided by the big supermarkets now ..
They saw it and made the competition another strength.
The only city I have been to that isn't perfect for supermarkets is London and that is really only the central mile.0 -
We used to shop mainly at Tesco. Over the years the shop became scruffier and scruffier, and although Tesco had planning permission to rebuild the store on an adjacent site they chose not to rebuild it because the store was so profitable - it was always packed and they saw no need to spend the money on a new store.
Then everything changed - Aldi opened next door to it a couple of years back.
Aldi is now packed, Tesco has lost a large percentage of its trade, and Tesco is now half-empty most of the time.
So Tesco are now building the new store they chose not to build. They must think the trade will go back to them again, having had utter contempt for their customers in the past. I think they're in for a little surprise, though - I doubt it will. Some will go back, but most, I think, will see Tesco as grossly overpriced by comparison with Aldi.
Aldi sell better food than Tesco (apart, perhaps from the fruit and vegetables) at much lower prices. The meat, for example, is far better quality, and the wines are sold at fair, low prices, without all the 'half price' lies from Tesco.
Aldi don't sell everything, but you can get most things there now - they've worked hard at that. And Waitrose (not Tesco) supply the balance, with a free coffee and a free newspaper.
Who needs Tesco any more?0 -
For me, online is best. I wish I could go to a wee town and walk round nice shops and a market, but there is nowhere at all that's easy for me to reach and has parking. Nearest shop to me is 11 miles.
I just find it far easier to order online and have it brought to the door... that way I don't get tired, the husband doesn't get ratty, and we don't have to pay for diesel and parking0 -
I simply don't need the plethora of choices nor the melee of exploding nuclear families rowing over what they're having for their tea. I still shudder at the time I mistakenly wandered into an Asda mid-Saturday afternoon. Never again!
I made that mistake yesterday. I popped into Asda when I was getting fuel. Definitely a better class of customer in Aldi!They also don't stock a lot of things that Sainsburys will so maybe people like me would choose the shop which provides the choice.
I don't know when you last shopped n Aldi. Over the past year, my list has moved from about 50:50 to weeks when I don't need to go anywhere else at all. I do a bit of storecupboard/freezer shopping elsewhere but that's not weekly. Aldi may not have loads of choices of each item but the range is increasing all the time.I would love to have a small local supermarket near me. My nearest, about 2 miles away, is a very overpriced Co-op.

I would love to have a high street in walking distance but the nearest I am to a fishmongers,butchers or greengrocer is about 4 miles and the "all under one roof" shop is less than a mile. Mind you I do go to a fantastic butchers near my parents house and stock the freezer up

I started to give big names a miss a year ago and to be honest choice isn't my number one priority - value for money is.....
For instance Sainsburys sell a 1.5kg free range chicken for £8.95 - Tesco sell a 1kg free range chicken for £5.50 (about £8 for 1.5kg) and Aldi sell a 1.5kg free range chicken for £4.99.......no contest.
I do use Sainsburys but only for things I can't get in Aldi. I used to shop online but with the exception of waitrose I have been a bit disappointed with some the deliveries0 -

oh don't get me wrong Im no stranger to Aldi/lidl when its convenient and Im passing - sadly the nearest one is way across town for me and bearing in mind I would still need to go to another supermarket to get a lot of what I like to buy then it is unlikely to be my first choice for a quick "get it over with" shopI do however like their wine options, lobster for a fiver and some of their more unusual meat options.:)

Yeah i can understand that I suppose I am lucky in that its just me that I feed and I am away working a lot so the food budget is more flexible to get what I like.
Back to the question though which is whether the biggies have had their day - I don't think they have as everyone has different needs when it comes to shopping and I love that fact that we have so much choice.0
